00:05It's July 31st at 6 p.m.
00:07The Marlins won another series this weekend,
00:10and here we are in a position where the Miami Marlins
00:14potentially could be buyers.
00:20Appel, you're shaking your head.
00:22Am I totally misreading this situation?
00:25No, they're not going to be buyers.
00:26You don't have to shake your head in such disgust.
00:28Well, I didn't want to interrupt you.
00:31It's not like I'm saying something.
00:33I don't think I'm saying anything outlandish.
00:34I'm not saying the Marlins are going to trade some of their best young talent
00:40in the farm system.
00:41If you listen to some media members or one form media member in this market,
00:45the Marlins should trade their top prospect for a 35-year-old third baseman
00:49who is not going to sign here after this year.
00:51But it wouldn't surprise me if the Marlins were to make lateral moves
00:56to try to bolster their roster and make a push at it
00:59without compromising the prospects that they have in their farm system right now,
01:05their top prospects.
01:06So right now there's six games out of the third wildcard spot,
01:09which is held by the Padres right now.
01:11The Marlins just won a series on the road at Milwaukee.
01:15The Brewers are the best team in baseball, or one of.
01:18I think the Cubs might have jumped them again over the weekend
01:21because, yeah, they did.
01:22They're tied with the Cubs for the best record in baseball right now,
01:25Toronto as well.
01:26That's a pretty impressive series win for the Marlins.
01:29They have been one of the best teams in baseball over the last 35, 40 games.
01:34And I don't think anybody expected them to be in a spot
01:38where they're having this conversation, right?
01:41Because we all thought that they were going to be sellers regardless,
01:45and I still think that, but I think this might be a softer sell
01:49than what we maybe thought previously.
01:53I think if you go back and look at what the Detroit Tigers did last year
01:56at the trade deadline, where they were kind of in a similar spot,
01:59really young team that nobody really thought would be in contention.
02:02They were in contention, but they had some veteran assets.
02:05Like Jack Flaherty was a starting pitcher they ended up trading away.
02:07They still ended up making the postseason,
02:09and they're one of the best teams in baseball this year again.
02:12So I could see the Marlins, you know, if they trade Edward Cabrera
02:15or if they trade Sandy Alcantara, they're not going to get,
02:19I mean, maybe one of the pieces will be an 18, 19-year-old
02:22that's not going to be able to help for four years,
02:23but you would expect to get back a prospect, a top prospect or two
02:29that are at the higher levels of minor league baseball
02:32who are knocking on the door of the majors
02:34who could probably step in right now.
02:36It's trading a guy like Jesus Sanchez,
02:38who probably is not going to be here for that much longer after this year,
02:41who's kind of holding up a spot from somebody else.
02:43You kind of know what Jesus Sanchez is at this point.
02:46It's trading a guy like Anthony Bender in the bullpen.
02:50Guys that, you know, you can get something back for,
02:52but it's not going to blow up the entire project.
02:55I think it's going to be a soft sell,
02:57and, you know, when you talk about guys like Sandy Alcantara
03:00and Edward Cabrera, given that those are the two best starting pitchers
03:05in a seller's market right now,
03:06you just had Kansas City Royals just re-signed
03:08one of their pitchers yesterday who was a hot name at the deadline.
03:13The Marlins are going to be able to get significant value back
03:17for a couple of these guys that they decide to trade.
03:24My prediction, I don't know if you care to hear it,
03:27but I think they actually end up holding on to Sandy
03:30and trading Edward Cabrera.
03:31I think that's the two biggest names they have,
03:33and I think that's what ends up happening.
03:34And one thing, I watched the game, I was in Orlando this weekend
03:38at an AAU tournament, so all I had was TVs around me.
03:41Bender's little delivery, his right leg doesn't bend.
03:44It's a weird thing.
03:45His name's Bender, and his right leg stays straight the whole game.
03:48But wouldn't it be, but Josh, I want your opinion
03:50because I don't know that much about that football.
03:52Wouldn't it be smart to trade Sandy?
03:54Because we found out last week he makes $17 million.
03:57The next guy makes $4 million.

04:00Well, that's part of the equation for why I think they might hang on to him.
04:05Because there are grievance that opens the door to the PA filing a grievance
04:12again against them for their payroll.

04:15So you're trading basically away half of your already league low,
04:21by a lot, payroll this year.
04:23Now, it's different if you go ahead and invest that money again
04:26in, say, an extension for Kyle Stowers
04:27or an extension for Augustine Ramirez or Yuri Perez
04:30in the offseason or even before that.
04:33Then they can get around it that way.
04:34But, you know, there's been a lot of reports that Sandy's already got his bags packed
04:39because they're on the road right now,
04:41and the deadline will be before they get back home.
04:43Maybe they do still end up trading him.
04:45But I think that, you know, given that he takes up a significant portion
04:49of their payroll right now, I think that actually lends itself to him sticking around
04:53maybe until the next trade deadline or the offseason.
04:56I don't know.
04:57I came on here and I said there's no chance that the Panthers are going to be able
05:00to re-sign Marshand, Bennett, and Eckblad, and they ended up doing it.
05:04So take my prediction of Sandy staying and Edward going with a grain of salt.

06:07because he's coming from a system that has done it successfully in Tampa Bay for a long time.

06:34but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up somewhere in the top,
06:38in the 5 to 10 range in MVP voting if he keeps this up.
06:41I mean, he's hitting close to 300 with an OPS that's almost 950 right now.
06:45He's been unbelievable for the Marlins this year.
06:48He hit 11, 12 home runs in the month of July.
06:51You're already seeing some of these pieces that he has brought in.
06:55Ronnie Henriquez, who's become one of their back end of the bullpen guys,
06:58out of nowhere, has been phenomenal.
07:00Jansen Junk, nobody knew who that was.
07:02And he's been a solid guy in their rotation.
07:05There are pieces here that, again, you guys in spring training,
07:10the whole Mervis phenomenon was born out of.
07:14I don't know who any of these people are.
07:15And Matt Mervis has a funny-sounding name.
