Border Czar Tom Homan spoke to reporters on Friday outside the White House.
Transcript
00:00Mr. Chairman, I wanted to quick ask you about alligators.
00:03There's been some reporting that it could cost $2 billion.
00:07I think you just walked through the thought process on that.
00:10I know the president said that you're going to be putting some undocumented migrants there as well.
00:15But it's not been running.
00:16You talked about that.
00:18Look, we just passed a big, beautiful bill.
00:20We need more beds.
00:21Governor Sancis came up with some beds pretty quickly.
00:26We're looking to get 100,000 beds and the more beds we get,
00:29the more bad guys we can take off the street.
00:31Every criminal alien we arrest on the street before we deport them, they need a bed
00:37because it takes several days, several weeks, several months to actually remove them.
00:41So we need more beds.
00:42We're bringing beds on as quickly as possible.
00:44I think Governor Sancis came up with a good model.
00:47And I'm not familiar with the calls yet.
00:49That's a question for ICE.
00:50But we're looking for beds, and I hope we get more beds on soon.
00:53We need the beds.
00:53I'm sorry, I said Alcatraz.
00:55I meant Alcatraz, the reopening of Alcatraz, the original.
00:59Well, look, I think they're looking at it.
01:02I don't think any of the decisions have been made yet.
01:03They don't look at the cost of it, but I'm not in a loop on that.
01:08But again, we're looking for any available bed space we can get that meet the detention
01:12standards that we're accustomed to.
01:15Beds are important.
01:16Last week, I woke up one morning, we had less than 200 beds.
01:21We'll fill them by half the day.
01:22So we're constantly having to change flight arrangements, move deportation as quick as
01:26we can to empty beds.
01:27We shouldn't be in that position.
01:29These operations take time.
01:31They're well thought out operations.
01:32We need to know that there's a number of beds available when we take the bad guys off the
01:36street.
01:37We need to bring beds on as quick as possible, and that's exactly what we're doing.
01:41What's the number of the plans to continue major enforcement pushes within sanctuary cities
01:45and states?
01:46Well, the president made it clear we're going to focus on sanctuary cities, make them
01:50a priority.
01:51And why is that?
01:52Because we know they're a problem.
01:54We know they're releasing public safety threats every day because they're sanctuary cities.
01:57They're not honor entertainers.
01:59We don't have that problem in most of Texas and Florida, for instance.
02:02So we can take resources in low areas and put them in an area where we know there's a problem.
02:06So I said for weeks, we're going to flood the zone in sanctuary cities.
02:10You're going to see a record number of agents in the neighborhoods and a record number of
02:14agents at worksite.
02:15If they don't give us the criminal handling, the safety and security of county jail, then
02:19we're going to go to the neighborhood and find them because we're going to do the job.
02:21We can't find them in the neighborhood, we'll find them in the worksite.
02:24So sanctuary cities get exactly what they don't want, more agents in the community, which
02:28is going to equal more collateral arrest because when we find a bad guy and he's with somebody
02:31that's not a criminal but he's here illegally, they're coming too.
02:34So the president made that commitment, and I made that commitment, and that's exactly
02:38what we're going to do.
02:39And we're already doing it.
02:41Mr. Holman, if you were talking about beds, if you did ultimately cost $2 billion to renovate
02:46in Alcatraz, is that a figure that you're going to go in?
02:49I'd have to see how many beds come out of that number, and what's the length of stay that
02:54facility's going to do.
02:55We've got short-term bed facilities, we've got long-term bed facilities.
02:58So unless I have that information, I can't even give you a guess.
03:02Would you rather see other states do things like Alcatraz instead of a stinker?
03:06I know the secretaries are working with other states to do that, to bring on beds quickly
03:10that meet our detention standards.
03:12Look, I think states have a responsibility too.
03:14What the Biden administration did for four years, releasing all these people into the
03:18country, not properly vetted, becomes a state problem.
03:21Look, all the traffic you saw in the last four years coming through Texas, 97% of them didn't
03:25stay in Texas, and went all over the country.
03:27So states have responsibility.
03:28States have felt the effect in crime and exhaustion of their social services.
03:35So states have a big share of the truth.
03:36I'm happy that states are stepping up.
03:38What kind of numbers do you have right now, as far as the beds are concerned?
03:43And what's the timeline to get to 100,000 beds?
03:47Quick as possible.
03:48I don't have a timeline.
03:49We've got a lot of contracts being reviewed.
03:51But the faster we get to the beds, the more people we can take off the street.
03:54How many people do you have right now?
03:56Right around 60,000.
03:58Mr. Helmut, what penalties should someone who assaulted a nice officer get?
04:02Pardon me?
04:03What penalties should someone who assaulted a nice officer face?
04:06That's a felony.
04:07You should go to prison.
04:09President Trump made that clear the other day.
04:13This ridiculousness is over.
04:18You put a hand on a nice officer, you're going to prison.
04:22You impede an nice officer, you're going to be prosecuted.
04:25When are you going to start a nice officer?
04:26If you're knowing and concealing a little airing, you're going to go to jail.
04:30If you throw a stone at an ice vehicle or an officer, those days are over.
04:34They're going to get out of the car.
04:36They're going to arrest you.
04:37President Trump made that clear the other day.
04:39I talked to President Trump about that.
04:40Within 15 minutes, he put a tweet out.
04:42So the ICE officers know.
04:44Zero tolerance.
04:45Board of Toronto knows.
04:46Zero tolerance.
04:47Mr. Holman, two questions.
04:50One is, there are a lot of Australians who, and I've spoken to many of that community.
04:54I'm not Australian.
04:55I'm a U.S. citizen from New Zealand originally.
04:57But they're genuinely scared.
04:59Australians drink a lot.
05:00A few of them have DUIs.
05:01They're here illegally.
05:02They've paid off their fines.
05:04They've, you know, done the, you know, restitution thing.
05:08But they're still scared they're going to be deported because they had a DUI, say,
05:1210 or 15 years ago.
05:13Is that true?
05:14That's what they're thinking is true.
05:15And the second thing is, there was someone arrested today who overstayed his visa.
05:21Do you, do you think that it's wrong to overstay a visa?
05:25I understand that.
05:26But do you think if they have committed no criminal offenses, they should be penalized the same in these harsh deportations?
05:33If you're here in violation of the law, you're going to be held accountable.
05:37You know, President Trump made it clear we're going to prioritize public safety threats and national security threats.
05:43But you in the country legally got a problem.
05:45That is why we're pushing the CB home map.
05:47Put your affairs in order and leave the country and make yourself available for some legal program.
05:52But if you violate, if you commit a crime, you violate your status here.
05:56That's on you.
05:57You violate the law, you're going to be held accountable.
05:59What about these policies with DUIs?
06:01As far as enforcement against...
06:02Over 10,000 people die a year from DUIs.
06:05That's true.
06:06That's a serious crime.
06:07I agree.
06:08As far as enforcement against mayors or harboring illegal aliens, when is this going to happen as far as mayors?
06:13That's a question for Pam Bonney and DOJ.
06:15I've said it from day one.
06:16No one's above the law.
06:17If you annoyingly and harbor, conceal, conceal an illegal amateur mice, that is a felony.
06:22If you impede ICE officers doing their job, that is a felony.
06:25That is a felony.
06:26That's a question with DOJ.
06:27I've asked DOJ to look at a few cases, and they're looking at him.
06:30So I'll just leave it at that.
06:31It's a question with Pam Bonney.
06:32Tom, how many...
06:33When do you expect the president to actually announce the specifics of the exemptions for deportation to the farm workers?
06:40Look, there's discussions going on.
06:42And I'm not going to get ahead of president on that.
06:44But I will say this, because I've read a lot of news stories that are inaccurate.
06:47There will be no amnesty.
06:49There are people talking about...
06:51We talk about policies every day.
06:53A strategy is every day.
06:55That is one of the discussions.
06:57Not going ahead of the president.
06:58We'll see what happens.
06:59Are you concerned about the amnesty provisions in Congress with Salazar's bill?
07:02There will be no...
07:03The president will not approve any amnesty.
07:04Proposes similar to Alligator Alcatraz.
07:06Which states and how many are you getting?
07:08We don't have agreements yet, so I'm not giving anybody any credit until we've got an agreement.
07:12What's happening with golden cards?
07:16The president announced a few months ago...
07:20Out of my lane.
07:21On the border zone.
07:22Okay.
07:23Can you explain an update on border wall construction?
07:24Which regions are seeing that restart?
07:26And also how much border wall and how quickly do you get any updates that you have on that?
07:31No.
07:32I know CBP.
07:33I taught CBP this morning.
07:34They have a plan.
07:35They've got a prioritization where they're putting border barriers up based on where they see the biggest need.
07:41A wall is being constructed.
07:43More water buoys are being put in the water.
07:46But that plan is being put together now based on the big beautiful bill, knowing they have the money available.
07:51They're reinstituting that plan.
07:53I don't have the most recent facts on that.
07:55Do you have states specifically that funding is going to where you're tracking border wall?
07:59No.
08:00No.
08:01Do you have a conversation about third country agreements?
08:02Which countries do you deal with?
08:04We have a conversation in a lot of countries.
08:06But until we get an agreement, I'm not going to comment who they are.
08:08Do you send more to South Sudan and that's what you need?
08:12Thank you, sir.
