00:01An opposition MP has urged the government to explain why tariff negotiations with the U.S. failed
00:08following the imposition of a 25% rate on Malaysian goods effective August 1st.
00:14In a Facebook post, Tasik Galugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry's
00:21goal of talks with Washington would naturally have been to lower the tariff rate.
00:27However, the 25% rate announced by U.S. President Donald Trump today was higher than the 24% originally imposed.
00:35He added that this clearly shows the government has failed to fulfill the nation's hopes on U.S. tariffs
00:41and reflects the relevant minister's failure to defend the nation's interests.
00:45The Bersatu Supreme Council member also said the development meant that the funds used to send Malaysian delegations
00:52for trade talks with the U.S. had gone to waste.
00:55Meanwhile, Miti said it will continue discussions with its U.S. counterparts
01:00and that it remains committed to engaging the U.S. on a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement.
