00:00Earlier this morning, Commissioner Donna Adams spoke to us a little bit more about
00:06the shooting, reiterated the circumstances involving Constable Smith, his colleague and
00:14the Special Operations Group, who attended a house here in North Motton on Allison Road
00:19to serve a warrant to repossess the house, when allegedly the occupant shot Constable
00:25Smith unfortunately fatally.
00:28The Special Operations Group returned, were able to attend and returned fire and shot
00:34him in the hand.
00:35He underwent surgery last night in Launceston General Hospital and doctors will at some
00:41stage today hopefully give police the all clear to begin questioning him.
00:47Commissioner Adams also said this morning that she had been speaking with the family last
00:52night amid what is obviously a very difficult time.
00:56Here's a little bit more of what she had to say.
00:59It was a very difficult visit last night.
01:02As you can understand, the family were grief stricken.
01:06And, you know, trying to provide support at a time when you're trying to process the loss
01:12of a loved one is really hard.
01:14But, the Blue family, we will come together today and over the next days and weeks, and we will
01:20support the family and each other.

01:29Premier Jeremy Rockliffe and Labor leader Dean Winter, in the midst of an election campaign,
01:34have said today they are suspending any campaign announcements.
01:38Offered their condolences to Tasmania police, obviously the family of Constable Smith and
01:44the wider community.
01:46Residents here in Northmonton, it's a tiny community.
01:49We spoke to someone earlier this morning.
01:51They expressed shock and just kind of disbelief that something like this could go on in such
01:57a small, rural, quiet part of Tasmania.
02:00This is obviously not something that Tasmania deals with.
02:03As we heard at the top of the program, it's 100 years or more since a Tasmania police officer
02:10died in a shooting incident in Tasmania.
