Forrest Tucker est un criminel américain qui n'en reste pas moins un gentleman. Véritable as du braquage et de l'évasion, il parvient à s'évader à 18 reprises. Ancien détenu d'Alcatraz, Trucker parvient à s'échapper d'un hôpital de San Francisco où il devait être opéré. Mais sa plus remarquable évasion est celle de la prison de San Quentin en 1979. Il poursuit délits et braquages, se fait arrêter, puis s'échappe et recommence. Criminel emblématique, il fascine toute l'Amérique. A ses trousses, un policier déterminé et une femme qui l'aime...
