Just Stop Oil campaigners protest outside the Court of Appeal at the Royal Courts of Justice, where sixteen climate activists are challenging their sentences. The protesters received prison sentences of between five years and 15 months in July and August last year for their roles in four demonstrations held by Just Stop Oil between August and November 2022, including climbing on gantries over the M25 and throwing soup over Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers. 00:00Just Stop Oil is a non-violent movement and if this is how you treat non-violent people,
00:04you know, they keep talking about the court backlog, they keep talking about the prison crisis
00:11and how huge these crises are and yet they keep imprisoning people who are no danger to the public
00:19and they're, you know, preparing to imprison more people. They're building the maximum facilities
00:24currently to house around 20,000 more prisoners. We very much regret the need to undertake
00:32disruptive action but the history of non-violent civil resistance, look at Suffragette, there's
00:38lots and lots of cases, but the history of non-violent civil resistance is that it works
00:45whereas writing letters, speaking politely, going to committees, generally speaking they don't work.
