00:00So, as Chief Secretary to the Treasury and being responsible for public spending across the country,
00:04I'm going around every nation and region to look at how we spend taxpayers' money in the best possible way.
00:09And it's great to be here in Newcastle this morning to look at how we're spending money on childcare.
00:13About £8 billion a year is going into nursery provision, such as Great Nurseries Unit,
00:17and we want to make sure that we're providing these types of opportunities for children across the country.
00:22Have you learned anything from your visit?
00:24Well, this nursery is a fantastic example of work being done really well at the heart of the community,
00:29providing great opportunities for young people, but also for their apprentices and for their staff.
00:34Nurseries are important for childcare and learning, but also really important for the economy,
00:38because they create great jobs for local people and help parents who are confused on how to get to work.
00:43And how could the visit help shape your early year spending?
00:47Well, I've been on the visit today with my colleague from the Department for Education
00:51that looks at how we help nurseries to succeed and to grow across the country.
00:55We're taking a lot of that information back to London as we decide public sector budgets.
00:59Over the next few months, which will set them until 2020 and 2019.
