00:56Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra GarcĂa from Telesurf Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:01We begin with news.
01:03The United Socialist Party of Venezuela called for a mobilization this March 5th to commemorate
01:08the 12th anniversary of the passing of Hugo Rafael Chávez FrĂas, commander of the Bolivarian
01:14Revolution.
01:15The mobilization is set to begin at different points of the city, including the historically
01:21combative 23 de Enero Parish and at the 4F Mountain Barrack, where lay the remains of
01:30Commander Chávez.
01:31Among the activities, there will be an ecumenical prayer at the military hospital, a commemorative
01:37cantata, and the projection of eight short films on the life and work of the revolutionary
01:43leader.
01:44The purpose of this mobilization is to exalt the memory of the commander of the Bolivarian
01:49Revolution, as well as the political ideology and the historical legacy that continues to
01:54be present.
02:01From his childhood in Sabaneta to his succession as President of Venezuela, Hugo Rafael Chávez
02:07FrĂas was a man guided by the social struggle and the dream of a united and sovereign Latin
02:12America.
02:13Twelve years after his sowing, let's know some details of his life and work.
02:20Hugo Rafael Chávez FrĂas was born in Sabaneta Varinas State in Venezuela on July 28, 1954.
02:28He was a revolutionary military and political leader who grew up in a humble family, living
02:33the difficulties faced by the popular sectors of the Venezuelan society.
02:37His training at the Venezuelan Military Academy prepared him as a soldier and brought him
02:41closer to Bolivarian ideas.
02:44This became the foundation of his political thinking centered on Latin American unity.
02:49In the 1980s, Chávez founded the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement 200, an organization that
02:56sought to transform the Venezuelan political system.
03:00The critical point came in 1989 with the Caracazo, a people's rebellion violently repressed by
03:05the government of Carlos Andrés Pérez.
03:09On February 4, 1992, Chávez led the military uprising against the government.
03:14Although the action did not achieve its objectives, it laid the foundations for insurrection among
03:19the Venezuelan people.
03:23Later, Chávez founded the Fifth Republic Movement and entered electoral politics.
03:28In 1998, he won the presidential elections with broad support from the population.
03:40Under his leadership, sectors such as oil were nationalized and social missions were
03:44implemented to guarantee health and education, achieving a Venezuela free of illiteracy by
03:49dropping the rate from 9.1% in 2003 to 4.9% in 2011.
03:57In addition, in regards to food, malnutrition was practically eradicated by decreasing the
04:02percentage of Venezuelans without a minimum daily food intake from 16% in 2000 to 5% in
04:082011.
04:09Poverty in the country was also reduced by half, from 62.1% in 2003 to 31.9% in 2011,
04:19according to data from the World Bank.
04:21Chávez was a critic of U.S. imperialism and an advocate for multipolarity.
04:25He promoted the creation of international associations such as ALBA, Petrocaribe, and
04:29the Union of South American Nations, which sought to strengthen sovereignty and cooperation
04:34in the region.
04:36Hugo Chávez passed away on March 5, 2013, leaving an indelible legacy.
04:42His revolution transformed Venezuela into a world reference in the struggle against
04:46neoliberalism and imperialism.
04:49His work lives on in the millions of Venezuelans who today have access to education, health
04:54and housing thanks to his humanist policies.
04:59In Ecuador, journalist Patricio Aguiar was shot to death on Tuesday in the coastal province
05:04of Esmeraldas.
05:06According to the newspaper, el lucero Aguiar was attacked during while he was covering
05:11a news event in the neighborhood of Fundo LimĂłn in the province of Esmeraldas.
05:15Preliminary information reported that the journalist was shot more than 10 times and
05:20he was murdered inside a house.
05:22Esmeraldas is one of the provinces most affected by violence in Ecuador.
05:30Some contacts according to figures from the Ministry of Interior in January of this year
05:35781 homicides were registered, 276 more than in 2024 and 247 more than 534 in 2023.
05:46The number of murders is also the highest since President Novoa, who is seeking re-election
05:51in the second round of elections scheduled for April 13, took office.
05:56To confront these criminal groups, Novoa decreed states of exception to incorporate the armed
06:02forces in the fight against crime.

07:18The government of Palestine denounces the Israeli regime for imposing Apartheid in the
07:23occupied West Bank.
07:24The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs of Palestine has stated in a communiqué that
07:29the Zionist incursions affected the daily life of residents by controlling their movements
07:34inside cities, villages and camps.
07:37The text emphasized that Tel Aviv's actions represent an atrocious punishment against
07:41the Palestinian people and resemble Apartheid regimes.
07:45The entity condemned the silence of the international community in the face of the situation in
07:50the West Bank, especially those nations that claim to defend human rights.
08:04The Palestinian Authority's Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission accused once
08:08the Israeli prison service of committing torture and humiliation against Palestinian detainees
08:14in their prisons.
08:16The Commission criticized the precarious conditions in offer prison in the occupied West Bank.
08:21Moreover, the entity condemned an Israeli raid on cells which came along with trenches
08:26and gas spraying grounded in detainees were demanding medical treatment to one of the
08:32inmates.
08:33Likewise, released Palestinian journalists recounted the torture they had gone through.
08:38Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates urged the United Nations
08:43Independent International Commission of Inquiry of the Occupied Palestinian Territory to mule
08:49over the high death toll in Israeli prisons.
08:58In Egypt, Emergency Arab Summit consolidates Gaza Reconstruction Plan.
09:03The plan pursues the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and aims to maintain that territory
09:08and the West Bank under a single authority.
09:11Furthermore, it rejects the attempt by the United States and its allies to displace the
09:15Palestinians from their territories.
09:18The text of the agreement requests the United Nations Security Council to provide international
09:23peacekeeping forces.
09:32Regarding the ceasefire, there must be a second phase for implementing the ceasefire plan.
09:41This plan has been agreed upon, and each party, especially the Israeli side, must fully implement
09:47its commitments.
09:51Under no circumstances can the use of starvation as a tool for collective punishment be allowed
09:57especially during this holy month.
10:02There are naturally challenges, including the intransigent and extremist Israeli stance
10:06and its attempts to evade the commitments outlined in the ceasefire agreement that Israel
10:11itself signed.
10:12Therefore, any talk of rejecting UNRWA or the Palestinian Authority is mere rhetoric
10:17and cannot be accepted as they represent international legitimacy.
10:21We are presenting an alternative, and all we want to say is that there will be no security
10:25or stability for Israel or the region except through a political horizon and the fulfillment
10:31of the aspirations of the Palestinian people.
10:36Yemen's armed forces have shot down a US MQ-9 drone that was violating Hodeidah's airspace.
10:43The spokesman of the Yemeni Armed Forces, Brigadier General Jaja Sareh, confirmed that
10:48this was the 15th drone intercepted.
10:51Sareh emphasized that the Yemeni forces will continue their defensive missions to reaffirm
10:57their commitment to confront any aggression against Yemen and to support Gaza and Lebanon
11:01in their fight against external aggressions.
11:04He also stressed the importance of monitoring and tracking hostile movements in the Red
11:08and Arabian Seas to protect national sovereignty.
11:19In Pakistan, a group affiliated with the Taliban breached a wall by means of two suicide bombings
11:24at a military base in addition to a concurrent raid that claimed over 10 lives in a northern
11:30province.
11:31Authorities informed that strikers stormed the compound, killing about 12 civilians and
11:36injuring 32 others.
11:38Pakistani police sources unfolded that the assault, initiated after insurgents blew up
11:44two vehicles equipped with explosives with the aim of tearing down the outer wall of
11:50the base, sparking a clash between terrorists and security forces.
11:54Likewise, the Pakistani Interior Ministry expressed on X their condolences to the victims'
11:59families and confirmed that at least six terrorists had been head to death.
12:10This is a military zone and the wall has collapsed.
12:14There is a mosque where many people break their fast.
12:18Many Muslims come here for iftar and prayer.
12:22There has been a lot of damage.
12:27We have recovered 12 bodies, including those of women and children, from three houses that
12:32were badly damaged.
12:35And 31 to 32 injured have been taken out and rushed to the hospital.

13:34The forest fire in Ofunato, northeastern Japan, has consumed 2,900 hectares and forced the
13:40evacuation of 4,600 people.
13:43More than 2,000 firefighters from all over the country are taking part in the firefighting
13:48efforts to prevent the flames from spreading to residential areas.
13:52Snow began to fall in the early hours of Wednesday morning, preventing helicopters from continuing
13:58their work due to the lack of visibility.
14:01According to the Meteorological Observatory, it is expected that the next precipitation
14:05will help to extinguish the flames.
14:08For the moment, the initial total of 1,084 houses damaged remains unchanged.
14:21Thousands of officers were deployed by Australian authorities to prepare for the arrival of
14:26tropical cyclone Alfred.
14:28Prime Minister Antony Albanese reported that the cyclone is approaching from the east of
14:32the country, mainly impacting the states of Queensland and New South Wales, threatening
14:38more than 13 million people.
14:40The weather bureau said that Alfred is a Category 2 storm, with winds of 95 to 130 km per hour
14:48expected.
14:49In this context, authorities ordered the closure of more than 500 schools in both regions and
14:56the damage caused by the winds is suspected to start from this Wednesday night.
15:15On Wednesday, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko offered to host Russian-Ukrainian
15:20peace talks in Minsk, also inviting U.S. officials to participate.
15:28Everyone should negotiate.
15:30If you want, come to Minsk.
15:33It's close to Ukraine, just 200 km from the Belarusian border to Kiev, so 500 km in total
15:42from Kiev to Minsk.
15:44Half an hour by plane.
15:47Do come.
15:49We'll sit here calmly, without hue and cry, and reach an agreement.
15:55So pass on to Trump that I'm waiting for him here, along with Putin and Zelensky.
16:03In the United States, protesters from 50 states gathered in parks and public spaces across
16:08the country to criticize the policies implemented by President Donald Trump as he gave his speech
16:14to Congress.
16:15In some of the demonstrations, activists waved Palestinian flags and took the opportunity
16:20to condemn the collaboration of the U.S. government with the Zionist regime of Benjamin Netanyahu.
16:26One of the rally points was the U.S. Capitol, where protesters chanted slogans against President
16:32Trump and expressed their concern about the growing threat of fascism, while rejecting
16:37cuts and layoffs in federal agencies.
16:45This is the context U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday night defended his administration's
16:50actions, despite the fact that many of the measures are mired in controversy.
16:56Amid applause from Republicans and rejection from Democrats, the president called his administration
17:02the most successful era in the country, having achieved in 43 days what other administrations
17:08have taken in 4 and 8 years.
17:12When he referred to the fact that more U.S. citizens thought the country was heading in
17:16the right direction, a Democratic congressman was removed from the room after protests that
17:21interrupted his speech.
17:23Trump reiterated old promises and made new threats.
17:26He confirmed that immigration crackdowns would continue and reaffirmed accusations that the
17:31migrants who entered through the border were dangerous criminals.
17:43The president of the U.S., Donald Trump, justified the tariff policies by assuring that his government
17:48will use these measures to attack other countries, which has caused great controversy so far
17:53in the U.S. head of state's derbying office.
17:57April 2nd, reciprocal tariffs kick in.
18:02And whatever they tariff us, other countries, we will tariff them.
18:08That's reciprocal, back and forth.
18:10Whatever they tax us, we will tax them.
18:16If they do non-monetary tariffs to keep us out of their market, then we will do non-monetary
18:25barriers to keep them out of our market.
18:28There's a lot of that, too.
18:29They don't even allow us in their market.
18:32We will take in trillions and trillions of dollars and create jobs like we have never
18:37seen before.
18:39I did it with China and I did it with others, and the Biden administration couldn't do anything
18:43about it because it was so much money they couldn't do anything about it.
18:47We have been ripped off for decades by nearly every country on Earth, and we will not let
18:53that happen any longer.
19:00In his speech, the U.S. president also made statements in relation to his conflict with
19:04the Panama Canal, making special emphasis on the fact that the canal was built by U.S.
19:09citizens denying his government's insurance and the right of Panamanians.
19:18Yesterday, a large American company announced they are buying both ports around the Panama
19:24Canal and lots of other things having to do with the Panama Canal and a couple of other
19:29canals.
19:31The Panama Canal was built by Americans for Americans, not for others, but others could
19:37use it.
19:38But it was built at tremendous cost of American blood and treasure.
19:438,000 workers died building the Panama Canal.
19:47They died of malaria.
19:49They died of snakebites and mosquitoes.
19:51Not a nice place to work.
19:54They paid them very highly to go there, knowing there was a 25 percent chance that they would
19:58die.
19:59The most expensive project also that was ever built in our country's history, if you bring
20:06it up to modern-day costs.
20:08It was given away by the Carter administration for one dollar, but that agreement has been
20:13violated very severely.
20:16We didn't give it to China.
20:18We gave it to Panama and we're taking it back.
20:25Unlike this, we have come to the end of this news brief, but you can find this and many
20:29other stories on our website at tellusorenglish.net and join us on social media.
