The Education Ministry (MOE) has taken appropriate steps to raise awareness among students and parents to buy the right food at the right place, said director-general of Education Azman Adnan.

Speaking to the media on Friday (Feb 21) after delivering his address at the opening of the 2025/2026 school session, Azman stressed the importance of this awareness following the tragic incident of a child choking on gummy candy, aiming to prevent similar occurrences.

Azman added that the issue of hawkers outside school premises would be closely monitored by the State Education Department (JPN) and school management to contact the local authorities (PBT) if there was a hawker within a 40-metre radius of the school fence.

00:00Sir, I want to ask another issue, about the children who got injured or died because of gambling.
00:09What are the KPM's steps to review the children in the outskirts of the school from the repeated cases like this?
00:19Actually, I need to explain that we know that there are some of our small shopkeepers who do business close to the school.
00:30But there has been a guidance issued by the related ministries, namely KPKT and the Ministry of Health,
00:40that shopkeepers are not allowed to do business within a radius of 40 meters from the school gate and the entire school.
00:52So, those are the laws and regulations that have been determined by KPKT and the Ministry of Health.
00:59And we at the school level, we are aware and we are always with the PBT and also KKM to ensure that this matter is followed.
01:10We do not have the power to actually close the shopkeepers and so on.
01:16That is the power of the PBT and also the Ministry of Health.
01:20However, the Ministry of Education of Malaysia, all this time we have taken reasonable steps.
01:27The first step is that we provide education to our children at school, parents and guardians.
01:35The most important thing is for these children to buy the right food in the right place.
01:44So, the issue related to the related case is actually not within our control.
01:55Because these children go to school in the afternoon, KFA school, which is under the control of the state government.
02:02But God willing, the Ministry of Education will always see this as a priority to ensure that it will not happen again.
02:11Issues like this.
02:13In fact, in our canteen, there is no food that is sold, such as the gum that caused our children to be infected earlier.
02:22So, our basic principle is clear.
02:25Some are allowed, some are not.
02:27However, the food that is sold by the shopkeepers outside the canteen door is actually the food that has been reported by KKM that cannot be sold.
