00:00So let's begin with the Mets. Pete Alonso, there was a lot of
00:03back and forth, will he be back with the Mets, take less money,
00:06got some offers at other places. There was only one place
00:10he wanted to be, Scotty, right back with the Mets.
00:13Hey, Pete, in your mind, were you ever close to going
00:15somewhere else?
00:16I mean, for me, like, I for me, this was this was this was it,
00:22like highly unfortunate. Throughout the entire offseason,
00:25we had the best, the best dialogue from the Mets. And like
00:28that was, that was it. Like, and for us, like this is this
00:31was the best opportunity. And for me, and I'm just really
00:36happy to be back. I mean, this is this was it.
00:38Well, I just know that he's stoked to be back in Queens with
00:43his teammates. And he's, you know, done a deal, in my view,
00:49that was short of what he could have had. And I mean, he's
00:52another guy that's, it's pretty apparent to me that's taking a
00:56risk. He's betting on himself. And he's gonna have to hit a lot
01:00of home runs, I think the next two years for the Mets, or
01:04that'll be the end of his Mets run. You know, I gotta be
01:07honest, I think it'll be the end of his Mets run. Anyway, I
01:10think he's lucky that they brought him back. Because I got
01:14to be honest, I think Mendoza wanted him. I think his
01:16teammates wanted him. I don't think Steve Cohen wanted him. I
01:20think Cohen, I think Cohen did it for the team and for Mendoza
01:25and the players, because they all wanted him and he didn't.
01:28And he knew he was kind of getting outweighed.
01:31I think I even so more so than Cohen, I don't think Stearns
01:35wanted him. I don't think Stearns wanted to bring Alonzo
01:38back. And he probably talked Cohen into the idea of not
01:42bringing him back. But the players and the manager did want
01:46him there. And yes, everybody did hear that, Scotty, except
01:49for us. Here is Steve Cohen, by the way, you will hear this one
01:54from him. Now he's spending a lot of money. Let's remember
01:57that. He just gave $750 million to Juan Soto. The payroll is
02:02going to be pushing $400 million. But there's one thing
02:06you're gonna have to do. If you want Stevie to keep spending
02:09that bread, better show up at the ballpark. He did not like
02:13the crowds at the end of last year.
02:15What did you make of where the Mets ranked as far as
02:18attendance last year?
02:20Yeah, I didn't like it. Okay, that really bothered me. 18th in
02:25attendance when we're right in the middle of a pennant race.
02:27I've said this before, the series against the Nationals,
02:32right before the Philly, the final Philly series, I think
02:34there were 18,000 fans in in the stadium during a great pennant
02:41race. And so I'm really hopeful this year. I mean, I'm told that
02:46usually attendance lags performance. And so I'm really
02:51looking forward to this year being a year when the fans come
02:54out.
02:55Listen, let's get real here for a second. Cry me a river about
03:02this guy's, you know, bills he's got to pay. He's got to pay all
03:06these guys. He paid Soto, he gave him almost $800 million.
03:10They did deals with, you know, pitchers, they did deals with
03:16polar bear. They've spent a ton of money. And listen, if you
03:21want to own the New York Mets, and you want to come in and you
03:26know, he's like one of the richest guys in the world. And
03:29you want to own the Mets in New York, you are going to spend
03:33tons of money. If you want to be a baseball owner, you are going
03:36to spend tons of money. If you're going to be an NFL owner,
03:39you are going to spend tons of money. If you can't handle
03:44spending tons of money, then don't get into sports. Because
03:49if you own a team nowadays, you either spend tons of money, or
03:54you are not an owner of a sports franchise. I mean, listening to
03:58this guy, you know, people say, Oh, my God, the money he's
04:02spending. Well, what in the F do you think he's supposed to do
04:06when you own the Mets or Yankees, and you own the
04:09Dodgers? What do you think? This is Kmart? Like, what do you
04:14think? You're a TJ Maxx, getting three for one shirts. I
04:18mean, honest to God, when you own these teams in the biggest
04:21markets in the world, you are gonna pay through the nose. Cry
04:26me a river. The guy's one of the richest guys in the world. I
04:29don't think he has financial problems.
