01:09Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisual Studios
01:12in Havana, Cuba, where we begin with the news.
01:22The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas stated on Tuesday that talks regarding the
01:34second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement with the Israeli regime have begun.
01:40Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif al-Khanu said in a statement that the group is currently
01:44focused on providing shelter and aid to its population, as well as rebuilding the devastated
01:50Gaza Strip.
01:51Al-Khanu also accused Israel of obstructing the implementation of the agreement's humanitarian
01:55protocol, adding that shelter and aid are humanitarian issues that cannot be delayed.
02:01The ceasefire agreement includes an initial truce phase of 42 days, during which a total
02:06of 33 Israeli prisoners and hundreds of Palestinian hostages will be released.
02:20In violation of Palestinian sovereignty, President Donald Trump affirmed that the United States
02:24will cease the Gaza Strip in order to rebuild it and its inhabitants will be displaced to
02:29neighboring countries.
02:30At a press conference with Israeli war criminal and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald
02:36Trump announced that the United States would assume a long-term ownership position over
02:41the Palestinian enclave.
02:42He also said that after a general demolition, he would rebuild the Gaza Strip to create
02:47economic development and jobs.
02:49These words, which flagrantly ignore Palestinian sovereignty and the right of this nation to
02:54have an independent state on its own territories, were applauded by Netanyahu, who stated that
02:59such a decision can change history.
03:05The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too.
03:11We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and
03:16other weapons on the site, level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings, level
03:22it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and
03:28housing for the people of the area.
03:33He has a different idea and I think it's worth paying attention to this.
03:38We're talking about it.
03:40He's exploring it with his people, with his staff.
03:43I think it's something that could change history and it's worthwhile really pursuing this avenue.
03:52I think peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia is not only feasible, I think it's going to happen.
03:58I think if we had another half a year in your first term, it would have already happened.
04:05President Donald Trump decreed a withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations
04:12Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East and the UN Human Rights Council.
04:18A statement issued by the White House confirmed this.
04:21In this sense, UNRWA Communications Director Julia Tumac recently warned about the increasing
04:25difficulties the organization faces in paying staff salaries due to the reduction of U.S. aid.
04:31UNRWA, established in 1949, is responsible for assisting approximately 5.9 million Palestinian refugees.
04:38This agency provides essential services in areas such as Gaza, the West Bank and in several
04:43neighboring countries, a crucial role in the welfare of the population.
04:55In the United States as well, pro-Palestinian protesters gathered near the White House on
04:58Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump held a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister
05:03Benjamin Netanyahu.
05:05Protesters marched chanting slogans and carrying posters expressing their support for the Palestinian
05:10people while condemning the Prime Minister's presence in the U.S.
05:14During the press conference, Trump stated that the Palestinians should be relocated
05:17from the Gaza Strip so that the United States can take control of the territory.
05:22In response to these statements, demonstrators expressed that there is no resettlement or
05:26transfer for the people of Gaza and that the only solution is for all Palestinians to return
05:30to the enclave.

06:05Welcome back.
06:12The first U.S. military flight carrying immigrants deported to the illegal Guantanamo Naval Base
06:17took off Tuesday, marking the beginning of a controversial move by the Trump administration.
06:21The facility, historically used to detain terrorists and suspects, would now be used
06:26as an immigration detention center.
06:28In statements to Fox News, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt affirmed that the U.S. will
06:33not be allowed to be a dumping ground for illegal criminals from nations around the
06:37world.
06:38President Donald Trump defended the move, assuring that the base has the capacity to
06:41hold up to 30,000 migrants.
06:44Cuba recently rejected Trump's announcement decision to use the Guantanamo Naval Base
06:48to incarcerate tens of thousands of migrants it has proposed to forcibly expel.
07:01The José Raúl Molino government deported Monday 43 Colombians complying with the anti-immigrant
07:06agreement sealed between Panama and the United States.
07:10The target of the deal is to arrest and deport migrants crossing over the Darién Gap.
07:15Earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro had requested to suspend for a while deportation
07:20flights to set a humanitarian protocol.
07:22Likewise, Petro had proposed to arrange charter flights for migrants, noting they won't receive
07:27them in handcuffs like criminals.
07:29However, the Molino administration dismissed Petro's calls.
07:32As a result, Panamanian authorities treated 43 deportees like offenders as they tied their
07:38hands during the flight, though they claimed there were just seven with criminal records.
07:51In Mexico, at least seven people have died and 14 others remain injured after a riot
07:55broke out at a social reinsertion center of the state of Tabasco in the city of Villar
08:00Morsa.
08:01The state attorney general's office reported the death after entering the penitentiary
08:04center on 12.30 p.m. local time once the riot was under control.
08:10Officials arrived at the prison accompanied by experts and elements of the investigative
08:14police to begin the pertinent investigations.
08:17This will be the second event of this nature that has occurred inside the Villar Morsa
08:21prison so far in the government of Javier May Rodriguez.
08:33The Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has recorded the highest temperature since 1912.
08:39According to world authorities, the temperature in the country's southern region reached 43.8
08:43degrees Celsius, a record high in 115 years.
08:48Officials warn that similar or even higher temperatures may be recorded in the next few
08:52days due to the effects of climate change, and urge the people of Rio Grande do Sul to
08:57take measures to deal with this situation.
08:59The previous record of high temperatures was reported in the city of Uruguay in 2022, when
09:05thermometers indicated 42.9 degrees Celsius.
09:08Thousands of people were leaving the Greek island of Santorini by sea and air for a third
09:22day on Tuesday as an unprecedented series of earthquakes shook the island.
09:26Officials said that some 6,000 people have already left the island, known for its spectacular
09:31cliffside views and a dormant volcano.
09:34Since last week, the island has been hit by hundreds of tremors.
09:37A 4.9-magnitude quake hit early on Tuesday morning, amid other smaller tremors.
09:42No injuries or damage were reported on Santorini and the neighboring islands of Anafi, Ios
09:49and Amorgos, which have also been affected by the seismic activity.
09:53Experts say the region has not experienced seismic activity on this scale in recent history
09:58and do not know how long it would last.
10:05In the Republic of the Congo, the M23 rebel movement declared a unilateral ceasefire in
10:13the city of Goma due to the current humanitarian crisis in the African country.
10:17In a statement, the M23 armed group emphasized its commitment to safeguard the people and
10:22localities under its control.
10:24It also exhorted the southern African development community to leave the country, since they
10:29do not deem important the presence of this organization in the country.
10:33The M23 detailed that they do not intend to take the city of Bukavu, while they condemn
10:39the intentions of the armed forces to bombard the areas under the control of this armed group.
10:53Meanwhile, citizens call on the Congolese government not to trust the ceasefire as they
10:57say it is a strategy to gain strength before continuing on the offensive.
11:04Today, such a statement still shows their military strategy.
11:10At the same time, as they say that the city of Bukavu should not be taken, it is a strategy
11:15for them to strengthen themselves with men and ammunition and at the same time, they
11:19are advancing to take the city of Bukavu.
11:21Thus, we still ask the authorities not to trust such statements, to focus and to stay
11:26alert to neutralize the enemies of the Republic.
11:30I think it's a total distraction and the Congolese government should not take it into
11:35account because every time the M23 AFC solicits for its sole effect, a while later, we find
11:41that it was a way to distract the Congolese government and some time later, the M23 AFC
11:47reclaims many villages and advances further.
11:50That is why I think as the M23 AFC are already in South Kivu soliciting for its sole effect
11:56a few days later, we will be surprised that they have taken Bukavu or Uvaira or even other
12:01villages in other provinces.
12:09The M23 move comes in response to different reports of the social crisis in the city of
12:13Goma due to the violence between armed groups.
12:16Health authorities say that hospitals are overburdened with trauma patients.
12:20They also warn that they are facing a humanitarian crisis as food and medical supplies are having
12:25difficulty reaching the conflict zone.

13:10The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, admitted that most of the commitments made
13:15by his administration have not been fulfilled and described the situation as fatal.
13:20During his speech, President Petro expressed his frustration with the lack of execution
13:24within his own government, assuring that a report of non-compliance is fatal since,
13:28out of 195 commitments, 146 were not fulfilled.
13:32On several occasions, he insisted on the need to transform the governmental apparatus to
13:36achieve the changes promised in his political agenda.
13:40In this sense, Petro pointed out that many of his proposals face bureaucratic obstacles
13:44and lack of will within the state institutions themselves.
13:55But I want to leave my concerns because this is the report of non-compliance and it is
14:01fatal, and I say this to the people, because I am ashamed.
14:06Out of 195 commitments, 146 have not been fulfilled.
14:12The revolutionary president but not the government, and the government does not, because individually
14:18they have parallel agendas.
14:30On February 5, 1971, the Frente Amplio was born in Uruguay, thus concerning the greatest
14:35journey of the left-wing forces in that South American country.
14:39In a historic session presided over by Senator Selmar Michelini, the founding act of the
14:44Frente Amplio was held in the Salón de los Pasos Perdidos of the Legislative Palace.
14:49Delegates of the founding political groups, cultural workers, workers, students, press,
14:54media, and a large audience participated.
14:57Its founders defined it as the rebirth of a people and the structuring of an authentically
15:02popular movement, deeply anti-imperialist, with a clear sense of national liberation
15:06to reach social justice and authentic democracy.
15:13A new museum dedicated to the modernist painter Alphonse Mucha will be inaugurated in Prague,
15:30Czech Republic, on the premise of Art for All.
15:33Starting February 24, more than a hundred works from the celebrated artist's family
15:37collection of paintings, lithographs, and sketches, including his masterpiece of the
15:41Slavic epic, after having been in storage for decades, will be on display.
15:46Mucha became famous for his floral posters, in particular of the French actress Sarah
15:50Bernhardt, which he made while living in Paris.
15:54Nevertheless, for 18 years he devoted himself mainly to works depicting moments of history
15:59and mythology of Slavic peoples.
16:02The capital of Denmark celebrates the Copenhagen Light Festival 2025, an event that has illuminated
16:13the city with more than 50 light installations.
16:16The festival was inaugurated on January 31 and will be open to the public until February 23.
16:24Attendees can explore the light installations and enjoy activities such as guided tours,
16:30scavenger hunts, and photo contests.
16:32This edition will also include the Race of Light, which will kick off the winter school
16:36vacations.
16:37So it is expected that the activities scheduled for February 9 will be attended by more than
16:411,000 people.
16:42This year the festival gained further international recognition, reaching for the first time 55
16:47million mentions on social media as the largest outdoor light art exhibition in Europe.
17:00Ninth edition of the Salsa Festival, a unique event showcasing authentic Cuban music and
17:04popular dances, will be held in Havana, Cuba.
17:07This cultural event, one of the most awaited on the island, will be held from February
17:1119 to the 23 at the Havana Club 500 and will feature the participation of outstanding performers
17:17and an orchestra, such as Alberto Alvarez, Isuzon, Santiago Septet, and Los Van Van.
17:22In addition, the festival will include DJ sessions and dance classes, offering attendees
17:27the opportunity to learn from renowned Cuban dancers.
17:30This edition will also feature international artists such as Brunella Torpoco and Danila
17:35Darcour, both from Peru.
