00:00German MPs warned that authoritarian states are using disinformation online to influence
00:07the federal elections.
00:10Thousands took to the streets of Valencia to demand the resignation of the regional
00:14president and his government for their response to devastating flooding which killed hundreds.
00:23US President Donald Trump threatened to expand his trade war on Sunday, turning his attention
00:29across the Atlantic.
00:31He told reporters import taxes will quote definitely happen with the European Union
00:36and possibly with the United Kingdom as well.
00:50While striking a firm tone with the EU, Trump sounded more conciliatory towards Britain and
00:56its new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.
01:20Trump's comments came just a day after world leaders in Mexico and Canada ordered retaliatory
01:26tariffs on American goods and put a strain on recovering EU-UK relations.
01:32Starmer is meeting with EU leaders in Brussels on Monday as he aims to quote reset relations
01:37with the bloc.
01:44Tens of thousands took to the streets of several German cities protesting against the influence
01:49of the far right in migration politics.
01:53In the city of Hamburg alone, police said 65,000 people took part in the demonstration.
02:01Many protesters focused on Christian Democratic Union candidate for German Chancellor, Friedrich
02:06Merz, who proposed two anti-immigration bills to the German parliament last week.
02:12Merz, the front-runner in Germany's election later this month, broke a long-standing pledge
02:18to not cooperate with the far-right Alternative for Germany party on Wednesday when he accepted
02:23its votes in order to pass his migration proposal.
02:28Since the end of World War II, Germany's established political parties refrained from working with
02:33extremist parties.
02:35Demonstrators therefore vented anger at the Conservative bloc for breaking this taboo
02:39by collaborating with the AfD.
02:44German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London to discuss
02:50bilateral relations, including the relationship between the EU and the UK, while ruling out
02:56rejoining the EU trade bloc five years after Brexit.
03:00Starmer said he wants to forge a closer relationship on defence, energy and trade.
03:06According to a Starmer spokesperson, Ukraine and the Middle East were also discussed.
03:11Starmer is expected to attend an informal EU summit in Brussels on Monday.
03:20A freed hostage who was released from Gaza captivity in January spoke to supporters in
03:25a video message that was screened at a rally in Tel Aviv.
03:31Doron Steinbrecher's address came after Hamas freed three hostages in the southern Gaza
03:36Strip and Israel released over 180 prisoners in the fourth round of exchanges during the
03:42ceasefire deal.
03:44With everything that is not easy, it was important for me to film this video and to send my message
03:54and my request and to be released and I'm fine and it will take time and it's a process
04:04and it doesn't end in a week or two, but I'm here thanks to you.
04:13The six-week truce between Israel and Hamas calls for the release of hostages and prisoners
04:18from the two sides, as well as the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza and an increase
04:24in humanitarian aid to the devastated territory.
04:31Thousands took to the streets of Valencia to demand the resignation of the regional
04:36president Carlos Mazón and his government for their response to devastating flooding
04:41which killed hundreds.
04:42Though smaller than the three previous protests in the Spanish city, officials say the march
04:47drew around 25,000 people.
04:50Mazón is under immense pressure after his administration failed to issue flood alerts
04:55to citizens' cell phones until hours after the flooding started last October.
05:00Mazón is also being criticized for what people perceive as the slow response to the natural
05:06disaster.
05:07It took days for officials to mobilize emergency responders.
05:11Residents who face a long, costly rebuilding process also say the government has been slow
05:16to deliver aid.
05:18Mazón has defended his handling of the crisis, saying that its magnitude was unforeseeable
05:23and that his administration didn't receive sufficient warnings from central authorities.
05:30With less than a month until the German elections, MPs are warning that authoritarian states
05:36including Russia are using disinformation to stoke instability.
05:40The German foreign ministry identified the doppelganger group of being behind fake news
05:45social media accounts in Germany.
05:47CSU politician Thomas Erndl confirmed that the government is aware Russia is trying to
05:52influence elections in Europe, especially in Poland and in Germany.
06:06For example, the AfD relies on these mechanisms to sow doubt in our state, in our institutions,
06:15to spread that nothing works, that foreigners and refugees are a big problem.
06:25Euronews requested a comment from the Russian embassy in Berlin regarding the allegations
06:30but received no response before publication.
06:33We have to do something about the institutions.
06:38We have to be better prepared.
06:40There are first attempts, first initiatives, also in the interior ministry.
06:47We need more money so that these institutions are well equipped.
06:53We have to use modern technology, artificial intelligence, which helps in the analysis of these processes.
07:01But above all, we need awareness and awareness in the population.
07:06And I think we still have a long way to go.
07:09Green politician Konstantin von Notz told Euronews that authoritarian states like Russia
07:15and China export democratic vulnerabilities through disinformation.
07:20News services are also an important means to counter this influence.
07:26We need better equipment, more staff, but above all, more legal powers.
07:34I think the pendulum has to swing back a bit in terms of security requirements
07:40and that's why we have to give the services more rights.
07:44Erndl recommends strong European coordination to tackle disinformation,
07:48especially if perpetrators are located abroad.
07:52Von Notz criticizes both the EU and German Interior Ministry
07:56for failing to tackle the problem of disinformation adequately.
08:04Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu travelled from Tel Aviv to the United States
08:09ahead of his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
08:13He said the two will discuss what he called victory over Hamas,
08:16as well as countering Iran and expanding diplomatic relations with Arab countries.
08:21The meeting marks Trump's first with a foreign leader since he took office.
08:26I think it's a testimony to the strength of the Israeli-American alliance.
08:30It's also a testimony to the strength of our personal friendship.
08:35Netanyahu's arrival to the US comes despite facing an arrest warrant
08:39issued by the International Criminal Court in November last year.
08:44The court's member states are required to detain suspects facing a warrant
08:48if they set foot on their soil.
08:50However, the US and Israel are not part of the court.
09:03Greenland's independence movement believes Trump's recent claims
09:07to take over the semi-autonomous Danish state
09:10is an opportunity for native Greenlanders to push for full sovereignty.
09:15Polling over the last few days show 85% of Greenlanders
09:19oppose joining the US.
09:21Kupanuk Olsson is Greenland's biggest influencer
09:24with 1.6 million followers, many of them in the United States.
09:28She says her culture, the Inuit,
09:30have survived over a thousand years of harsh conditions.
09:34She's not afraid of Trump's bellicose rhetoric.
09:37I have chosen not to be afraid.
09:40I have chosen not to be scared.
09:44We just have to figure out how to do the best dance with Trump.
09:50How can we make the best deals out of this?
09:54It's a very colonial mindset when you think
09:58when Denmark no longer has Greenland, the US will just take it.
10:02And it's just like colonizers talking with another colonizer mindset.
10:07It's like we are human beings.
10:09So while Greenlanders say they don't want to be part of the United States,
10:12it doesn't necessarily mean that they want to be closer to Denmark either.
10:16Stronger autonomy and self-determination for the indigenous Inuit
10:19is something that many people are calling for,
10:22even independence, all of it in varying degrees.
10:26I think what Greenland is really going for is self-independence
10:29in terms of government and all that.
10:31So it's really great that Denmark supports Greenland
10:33in terms of financial and economically.
10:35But I can see why the US would be interested
10:38because they are obviously very much interested
10:41in the geopolitical positioning that Greenland is in
10:44and all the materials that they can acquire
10:47in terms of getting better military equipments and such.
10:51Those who want independence believe doing a deal with the US
10:54while also having good relations with Denmark and Europe is the best way forward.
10:59You have to admit that he has done a lot of good for our independence course.
11:04In what way?
11:06Well, whenever Trump is not in office, people don't care about Greenland.
11:11You're here for a reason.
11:13So we get the opportunity to explain what is going on in Greenland
11:18and trying to explain that we're not isolationists.
11:21We want to work with the rest of the world, not just Denmark.
11:24The same polling says 84% of Greenlanders want their homeland
11:28to be independent from Denmark, yet half of that
11:31only if it doesn't have a negative impact on their standard of living.
