00:00Every 3rd week of January, we celebrate Autism Consciousness Week.
00:05It's a colorful and important event that gives awareness
00:10about the Autism Spectrum Disorder
00:12and promotes an inclusive society for people with Autism.
00:17So that we can better understand the importance of this,
00:21we will be joined by Ms. Dang Uyko from Autism Society Philippines.
00:26Welcome back to Rise and Shine Philippines, Ms. Dang.
00:29Good morning. Thank you, Ms. Diane and Dr. P for inviting Autism Society Philippines.
00:33You're so early, Doc.
00:34Because this is really a PHD.
00:36Yvonne told me that I should call you Dr. P.
00:40Oh, why not?
00:41This is just a prop.
00:42Just a prop.
00:43But thank you so much, ma'am.
00:44Let's manifest.
00:45Yes, let's manifest.
00:46Let's go with our discussion for this morning.
00:49What is the main goal of Autism Consciousness Week and why is it important?
00:54Okay. We are thankful to the former President Fidel V. Ramos
00:58that 29 years ago, he proclaimed the 3rd week of January
01:02as National Autism Consciousness Week
01:04where the lead government agencies
01:08we have activities that promote action.
01:14Action for everyone, the public,
01:17to give Filipinos on the Autism Spectrum
01:22to live with dignity, to have equal rights and access,
01:27to function independently and to be productive,
01:32to contribute productively.
01:35Okay. How are our activities?
01:38It's fun because it's almost over.
01:41I just have two things to mention
01:43because there are a lot of activities throughout the week.
01:46This is the one that started and ended.
01:49When it started, we had a sensory-friendly movie showing.
01:55It was done in 10 malls, 10 cinemas,
02:00Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao
02:02in collaboration with 20 of the 106 chapters of ASP.
02:07And it's great that it was done in a small accommodation.
02:11The theater was not darkened.
02:13The audio was lowered.
02:15The kids could run, scream, laugh.
02:18There was no noise.
02:20Then we created an autism-friendly space.
02:23It's beautiful.
02:25You know, we cried when we saw the families
02:29for the first time having their children together
02:32inside the cinema because it can be very challenging.
02:36So, it's very simple, very accommodation
02:39and inclusion, right?
02:41Is this the one with Elisana De Rossi?
02:43Yes!
02:44Elisana De Rossi was there
02:46as well as the child actor lead of the movie.
02:49Their movie last year?
02:51Yes.
02:52So, I don't think we can compare which movie that is.
02:54And then, our closing tomorrow, Saturday,
02:59would be this one.
03:01It's also inclusive.
03:03It's a basketball clinic.
03:04We call it Hoops for All.
03:06Wow!
03:07The workshop will conduct
03:09a workshop for 25 kids and youth
03:11on the autism spectrum
03:13with Norman Black and the rest of the members.
03:16Wow!
03:17Interesting!
03:18So, they will modify
03:21how they will do the workshop
03:23so that our children can get it more easily.
03:26And then, at the same time,
03:28they were willing to go through sensitivity training
03:32including their employees.
03:34So, in this way,
03:36they were given a chance
03:38to enjoy our kids and youth
03:41on the spectrum.
03:42But, at the same time,
03:43they're sending the message
03:45of National Autism Consciousness Week.
03:47Right?
03:48Promoting action.
03:49And it's funny
03:50because those people,
03:51the very prominent,
03:52are advocates of this.
03:54But, I understand
03:55you've been doing activities like this
03:57for so many years already.
03:58But, how's the reception from the public?
04:01The change is already big
04:03because before,
04:05okay, it's a mandate.
04:07So, the government agencies,
04:09at the start of the week
04:12of National Autism Consciousness Week,
04:14they will make a pledge,
04:15a commitment to promote.
04:17But, this time,
04:18there are a lot of private organizations
04:23including business organizations
04:26that are partnering with us.
04:29So, it's different
04:30and with the help of social media
04:32and shows like this,
04:34we can say that
04:36we are now going
04:38beyond consciousness,
04:40beyond awareness.
04:42So, what we want now
04:44would already be
04:45acceptance,
04:46accommodation,
04:47and appreciation.
04:48Okay, that's good.
04:49We went beyond consciousness
04:51and awareness.
04:52So, talking about that, Ms. Danga,
04:54moving forward,
04:56what can the government
04:58and other private organizations
05:00do to continue to be
05:02inclusive in our society?
05:03Yes.
05:04The Autism Society Philippines
05:06is now 36 years old
05:08here in the Philippines.
05:11So, 36,
05:13that means
05:14our children are already adults.
05:16Right?
05:17They started.
05:18I started.
05:19Gio is still young.
05:20He's 31 now.
05:22And so, now,
05:23we're going to
05:24economic empowerment.
05:25Okay?
05:26So, we have
05:27the ASP Autism Works
05:29where ASP serves as a bridge
05:32middleman
05:33between job-ready
05:35people on the spectrum
05:37with willing,
05:39accommodating partners
05:41who will employ them.
05:43Okay?
05:44So, we also have others
05:46whose real focus
05:48is to empower them
05:50economically.
05:51So, for example,
05:52our artists.
05:53We have a lot of artists
05:54on the spectrum.
05:55Right?
05:56So, we not just develop them,
05:57but we also
05:59help them
06:00sell their products
06:02so that they can make a living
06:03out of their talent.
06:04There you go.
06:05So, it doesn't go away.
06:06People should be equal
06:08in their views
06:10and be on the spectrum.
06:12Right?
06:13Especially in this time,
06:15there's still stigma.
06:16Ma'am,
06:17what do people usually see?
06:19Or,
06:20before they know
06:21or become aware
06:22about the spectrum itself,
06:24what do people usually do?
06:27Or how do they
06:28talk to these people
06:30who are with autism?
06:31I mean,
06:32the stigma
06:33that we still have today.
06:34Ah,
06:35we can't say
06:37that it's totally gone.
06:39Okay.
06:40Bullying,
06:41or you know,
06:42you'll hear comments
06:44from parents
06:45that,
06:46why is that kid
06:47like that?
06:48He doesn't have any discipline.
06:49So,
06:50I'd like to clarify.
06:51So, autism
06:52is a neurodevelopmental
06:54disorder.
06:55Okay.
06:56Their development
06:57is different.
06:58It is not
06:59psychological.
07:01Others say,
07:02it's a mental health
07:03disorder.
07:04It's not.
07:05Right?
07:06It's a spectrum.
07:07It's true that
07:08others have learning
07:09disability,
07:10but they're not,
07:11because others
07:12call them retarded.
07:13Right?
07:14So,
07:15it's not all...
07:16So, it's offensive.
07:17Yes.
07:18We know that
07:19we're not using
07:20those words anymore.
07:21Okay.
07:22So,
07:23another misconception
07:24would be
07:25that there are
07:26physical markers.
07:27So,
07:28autism is part of
07:29the,
07:30what we call,
07:31invisible
07:32or hidden
07:33disabilities.
07:34So,
07:35when they see them
07:36in public,
07:37for example,
07:38when they flip,
07:39when they puke,
07:40or when they cry,
07:41they think,
07:42what is that?
07:43The kid doesn't have
07:44any discipline.
07:45Right?
07:46The parents
07:47don't teach them.
07:48But they don't know
07:49that probably,
07:50the child
07:51is a sensory
07:52processing disorder.
07:53He's inside a mall
07:54or something like this.
07:55There are a lot of lights.
07:56There are a lot of people.
07:57So,
07:58it's up to him.
07:59Right?
08:00He can't
08:01process it easily.
08:02And so,
08:03what happens is
08:04he cries,
08:05he goes crazy.
08:06People think
08:07that there's no discipline.
08:08Right?
08:09Or,
08:10some people say,
08:11that's a norm.
08:12They go around.
08:13Like that.
08:14But,
08:15they have
08:16what we call,
08:17repetitive
08:18movement
08:19that is the result
08:20of their
08:21sensory processing
08:22issues.
08:23Well,
08:24I just want to
08:25congratulate also
08:26all of your colleagues.
08:27We see the progress.
08:28Yes.
08:29We see the
08:30result of your work.
08:32And maybe
08:33to our viewers,
08:34to those who want to
08:35contact and support
08:36your programs,
08:37where can you
08:38contact?
08:39And please invite
08:40some activities.

08:42social media,
