00:00The next day, at 6 in the morning, we were awakened by a bell sound.
00:24This is how the people begin their day,
00:27thanking the Lord.
00:35While the children are getting ready to go to school.
00:58Good morning!
01:00It's 7 o'clock in the morning, but the class will probably start at 7.30 or 8 o'clock,
01:08because there are a lot of students there.
01:11Since it's raining, they might be traveling at this time.
01:16The road is a bit narrow.
01:18Some of them are still living in the mountains.
01:22It's about 30 minutes to 1 hour away.
01:27The road is a bit narrow, but it's a perfect attendance for the children on the first day of school in the new year.
01:42It's about 30 minutes to 1 hour away.
01:54There are only two classrooms in Banluan,
01:58so the students of grades 1, 2, and 3 are together in one room.
02:04Good morning to you, dear children.
02:07Good morning, dear children.
02:11Good morning, dear children.
02:15Good morning, dear children.
02:21Teacher Michael is the teacher of grades 4, 5, and 6.
02:26This is called a multi-grade system.
02:31It's hard to teach one class, what if you teach three at the same time?
02:36Do you want to dance?
02:38Yes!
02:40Do you want to dance?
02:42Yes!
02:47Aside from Teacher Alvin and Teacher Michael, there is another teacher in Banluan.
02:53But she doesn't have a classroom, no uniform, and no permanent position.
02:59How do you go back to your seat?
03:03Good.
03:08Teacher Leni Forugito is a volunteer teacher.
03:13She is the first one in their area to finish her studies.
03:19Abacada!
03:23In our time, it was not popular to study.
03:28Education was not important in our time.
03:34Why?
03:36Because our parents needed help with their needs.
03:43According to Teacher Leni, they only had a daycare center in Banluan.
03:48So if you want to go to grade 1, you need to cross 20 rivers and walk for 3 hours down the mountain to get to the school.
04:00After you finished your daycare, how did you study?
04:05Where did you go?
04:07I went to a place we know in Tagalog.
04:11What did you do there?
04:13I went there to study.
04:16I was a maid.
04:18You were a maid in another family?
04:20Yes.
04:22Why?
04:24So that I could finish my studies.
04:27Because my parents couldn't afford it.
04:32The Mangyans call on the system where the Mangyans live in the houses of Tagalogs.
04:41The children work like housemaids.
04:46But instead of salary, they only get free housing and education.
04:53How long have you been working?
04:56Since I was in grade 1 until I graduated.
05:00I was 8 years old.
05:02In exchange, I was able to buy food and pay for my school fees.
05:07But you didn't get to see your family?
05:10No. They only visit us sometimes during Christmas.
05:17Isn't that sad?
05:19At first, it was sad. I cried in one room.
05:23But after a few years, I got used to them being my family.
05:30In spite of the sadness, Teacher Lenny continued to study.
05:34Even though she experienced bullying a few times.
05:39What did they say to you?
05:41That I was a Mangyan.
05:45They said that my toes were too wide.
05:49What do you think about?
05:52Nothing. Sometimes, I don't care. Sometimes, I just cry.
05:56Others used Teacher Lenny as a weapon to succeed.
06:06I prayed to the Lord,
06:09Lord, please let me finish my studies here in this college.
06:13I will serve my tribe.
06:16Lord, please let me finish my studies here in this college.
06:20I will serve my tribe.
06:26After many years, Teacher Lenny finished her BS Education course.
06:34And like her promise, she returned to the mountains to serve.
06:41Did anyone tell you to stay here?
06:46A lot of people told me,
06:49Why do you want to return to the mountains? You look good.
06:53You are clean. You have finished your studies. You are civilized.
06:57Why do you want to return?
06:59I replied,
07:01That's what I told the Lord.
07:03If I finish my studies here, I will serve my tribe.
07:10I will serve my tribe.
07:13I will serve my tribe.
07:15Because Teacher Lenny is not yet passing the Licensure Exam for Teachers,
07:20her position is just a volunteer teacher.
07:23And she can only teach kindergarten to this day.
