00:00Ladies and gentlemen, the Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee for Inaugural
00:09Ceremonies, the Honorable Roy Blunt.
00:17Thank you all.
00:18If you have a seat, you can sit down.
00:21Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, Mr. President-elect, Mr. Vice President-elect, ladies and gentlemen,
00:29welcome to the Inauguration of the 45th President of the United States of America.
00:42Today the legislative, the executive, the judicial branches of our constitutional government
00:48come together for the 58th Inauguration of the President of the United States.
00:55Millions of people all over the world will watch and will listen to this event.
01:01Thirty-six years ago at his first Inauguration, it was also the first Inauguration on this
01:06side of the Capitol, President Ronald Reagan said that what we do here is both commonplace
01:14and miraculous.
01:16Commonplace every four years since 1789 when President George Washington took this exact
01:24same oath.
01:27Miraculous because we've done it every four years since 1789 and the example it sets for
01:35democracies everywhere.
01:38Washington believed the Inauguration of the second President would be more important than
01:43the Inauguration of the first.
01:47Many people had taken control of a government up until then, but few people had ever turned
01:53that control willingly over to anyone else.
01:57And as important as the transfer of the first transfer of power was, many historians believe
02:04that the next election was even more important.
02:07When in 18 and 1, one group of people arguably for the first time ever in history willingly
02:15if not enthusiastically gave control of the government to people they believed had a dramatically
02:22different view of what the government would, should, and could do.
02:28After that election that actually discovered a flaw in the Constitution itself, which was
02:35remedied by the 12th Amendment, Thomas Jefferson at that Inauguration beyond the chaos of the
02:41election that had just passed said, we are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.
02:49After four years of Civil War, Lincoln's second inaugural speech tried to find reason
02:55for the continued war when he pointed out that both sides prayed to the same God.
03:01He'd earlier written about those fervent prayers that one side must be and both sides may be
03:08wrong.
03:10But in 1865, he looked to the future and the memorable moment in that speech was with malice
03:17toward none and charity for all.
03:20In the middle of the Depression, the country was told that the only thing we had to fear
03:24was fear itself.
03:26And President Kennedy talked about the obligation in democracy to country.
03:31The great question that day was, ask what you can do for your country.
03:37So we come to this place again, commonplace and miraculous, a national moment of celebration
03:45but not a celebration of victory, a celebration of democracy.
03:52And as we begin that celebration, I call on his eminence, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan,
03:58Reverend Dr. Samuel Rodriguez, and Pastor Paula White Caine to provide readings and
04:04the invocation.
04:15The prayer of King Solomon from the Book of Wisdom.
04:22Let us pray.
04:24God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy, you have made all things and in your providence
04:32have charged us to rule the creatures produced by you, to govern the world in holiness and
04:39righteousness and to render judgment with integrity of heart.
04:46Give us wisdom for we are your servants, weak and short-lived, lacking in comprehension
04:55of judgment and of laws.
04:58Indeed, though one might be perfect among mortals, if wisdom which comes from you be
05:05lacking, we count for nothing.
05:09Now with you is wisdom who knows your will and was there when you made the world, who
05:15understands what is pleasing in your eyes, what is conformable with your commands.
05:23Send her forth from your holy heavens, from your glorious throne dispatch her, that she
05:30may be with us and work with us, that we may grasp what is pleasing to you.
05:37For she knows and understands all things and will guide us prudently in our affairs and
05:43safeguard us by her glory, amen.
05:53In the gospel of Matthew, the fifth chapter, God blesses those who are poor and realize
06:00their need for him, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
06:05God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
06:09God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the earth.
06:14God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
06:20God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
06:24He blesses those who are pure in heart, for they will see God.
06:29God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called children of God.
06:34God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
06:39And God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all
06:46sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.
06:51For you are the light of the world, like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
06:56No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket.
07:01Instead a lamp is placed on its stand where it gives light to everyone in the house.
07:06In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, that everyone will praise
07:14your heavenly Father respectfully in Jesus' name.
07:22We come to you, Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, with grateful hearts, thanking you
07:29for this great country that you have decreed to your people.
07:34We acknowledge we are a blessed nation with a rich history of faith and fortitude, with
07:41a future that is filled with promise and purpose.
07:45We recognize that every good and every perfect gift comes from you, and the United States
07:52of America is your gift, for which we proclaim our gratitude.
07:57As a nation, we now pray for our President, Donald John Trump, Vice President Michael
08:05Richard Pence, and their families.
08:08We ask that you would bestow upon our President the wisdom necessary to lead this great nation,
08:16the grace to unify us, and the strength to stand for what is honorable and right in your
08:22sight.
08:23In Proverbs 21.1, you instruct us that our leader's heart is in your hands.
08:30Gracious God, reveal unto our President the ability to know the will, your will, the confidence
08:38to lead us in justice and righteousness, and the compassion to yield to our better angels.
08:46While we know there are many challenges before us, in every generation you have provided
08:51the strength and power to become that blessed nation.
08:56Guide us in discernment, Lord, and give us that strength to persevere and thrive.
09:01Now bind and heal our wounds and divisions, and join our nation to your purpose.
09:07Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, the psalmist declared.
09:13Let your favor be upon this one nation under God.
09:19Let these United States of America be that beacon of hope to all people and nations under
09:25your dominion, a true hope for humankind.
09:29Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
09:34We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
09:59Amen.
10:29Amen.
10:59Amen.
11:29Amen.
11:59Amen.
12:29Amen.
12:59Amen.
13:29Well, the Missouri State University crowd practices and performs about two
13:59blocks from my home in Springfield, Missouri, so it was easy to find them, and we're pleased
14:05they're here.
14:09It's also a great opportunity for me to introduce my colleague, the Senator from New York, Chuck
14:18Schumer.
14:26My fellow Americans, we live in a challenging and tumultuous time, a quickly evolving, ever
14:33more interconnected world, a rapidly changing economy that benefits too few while leaving
14:40too many behind, a fractured media, a politics frequently consumed by rancor.
14:48We face threats, foreign and domestic.
14:53In such times, faith in our government, our institutions, and even our country can erode.
15:03Despite these challenges, I stand here today confident in this great country for one reason,
15:11you, the American people.
15:21We Americans have always been a forward-looking, problem-solving, optimistic, patriotic, and
15:29decent people.
15:30Whatever our race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, whether we are immigrant
15:37or native-born, whether we live with disabilities or do not, in wealth or in poverty, we are
15:45all exceptional in our commonly held yet fierce devotion to our country and in our
15:52willingness to sacrifice our time, energy, and even our lives to making it a more perfect union.
16:02Today we celebrate one of democracy's core attributes, the peaceful transfer of power.
16:09And every day we stand up for core democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution,
16:17the rule of law, equal protection for all under law, the freedom of speech, press, religion,
16:27the things that make America, America.
16:30And we can gain strength from reading our history and listening to the voices of average
16:37Americans.
16:38They always save us in times of strife.
16:42One such American was Major Sullivan Ballou.
16:47On July 14, 1861, when the North and South were lining up for their first battle, a time
16:55when our country was bitterly divided and faith in the future of our country was at
16:59a nadir, Major Ballou of the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers penned a letter to his wife, Sarah.
17:09It is one of the greatest letters in American history.
17:12It shows the strength and courage of the average American.
17:16Allow me to read some of his words, which echo through the ages.
17:23My very dear Sarah, he wrote, the indications are very strong that we shall move in a few
17:30days, perhaps tomorrow, if it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for
17:36my country, I am ready.
17:39I have no misgivings about or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my
17:46courage does not halt or falter.
17:50I know how strongly American civilization now leans upon the triumph of the government
17:56and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering
18:02of the revolution, and I am willing, perfectly willing, to lay down all my joys in this life
18:11to help maintain this government and to pay that debt.
18:16Sarah, my love for you is deathless.
18:20It seems to bind me to you with the mighty cables that nothing but omnipotence can break,
18:26and yet my love of country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me irresistibly
18:33on with all these chains to the battlefield.
18:38Sullivan Ballou gave his life on the battlefield a week later at the first battle of Bull Run.
18:48It is because Sullivan Ballou and countless others believed in something bigger than themselves
18:53and were willing to sacrifice for it that we stand today in the full blessings of liberty
19:00in the greatest country on earth.
19:03And that spirit lives on in each of us, Americans whose families have been here for generations
19:10and those who have just arrived, and I know our best days are yet to come.
19:18I urge all Americans to read Ballou's full letter.
19:22His words give me solace, strength.
19:27I hope they will give you the same.
19:34Now please stand while the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas,
19:40administers the oath of office to the Vice President of the United States.
19:53Thank you for doing this.
19:55Place your hand on the Bible.

29:00Chief Justice Roberts, President Carter,
29:04President Clinton, President Bush,
29:08President Obama, fellow Americans,
29:12and people of the world, thank you.
29:16We, the citizens of America,
29:23are now joined in a great national effort
29:27to rebuild our country and restore its promise
29:31for all of our people.
29:36Together, we will determine the course of America
29:39and the world for many, many years to come.
29:45We will face challenges.
29:47We will confront hardships.
29:50But we will get the job done.
29:53Every four years, we gather on these steps
29:56to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power.
30:01And we are grateful to President Obama
30:04and First Lady Michelle Obama
30:08for their gracious aid throughout this transition.
30:12They have been magnificent.
30:23Today's ceremony, however, has very special meaning
30:28because today we are not merely transferring power
30:32from one administration to another
30:35or from one party to another,
30:37but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C.,
30:42and giving it back to you, the people.
30:53For too long, a small group in our nation's capital
30:57has reaped the rewards of government,
31:00while the people have borne the cost.
31:06Washington flourished,
31:08but the people did not share in its wealth.
31:12Politicians prospered, but the jobs left
31:16and the factories closed.
31:20The establishment protected itself,
31:24but not the citizens of our country.
31:27Their victories have not been your victories.
31:31Their triumphs have not been your triumphs.
31:34And while they celebrated in our nation's capital,
31:38there was little to celebrate
31:40for struggling families all across our land.
31:51That all changes, starting right here and right now,
31:57because this moment is your moment.
32:00This moment, it belongs to you.
32:09It belongs to everyone gathered here today
32:12and everyone watching all across America.
32:16This is your day.
32:18This is your celebration.
32:20And this, the United States of America,
32:24is your country.
32:33What truly matters is not which party controls our government,
32:38but whether our government is controlled by the people.
32:46January 20th, 2017,
32:50will be remembered as the day the people
32:54became the rulers of this nation again.
33:03The forgotten men and women of our country
33:06will be forgotten no longer.
33:13Everyone is listening to you now.
33:16You came by the tens of millions
33:18to become part of a historic movement
33:21the likes of which the world has never seen before.
33:31At the center of this movement is a crucial conviction
33:36that a nation exists to serve its citizens.
33:41Americans want great schools for their children,
33:44safe neighborhoods for their families,
33:47and good jobs for themselves.
33:51These are just and reasonable demands
33:56of righteous people and a righteous public.
34:01But for too many of our citizens,
34:03a different reality exists.
34:06Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities,
34:10rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones
34:14across the landscape of our nation.
34:17An education system flush with cash,
34:21but which leaves our young and beautiful students
34:25deprived of all knowledge.
34:28And the crime and the gangs and the drugs
34:33that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country
34:37of so much unrealized potential.
34:41This American carnage stops right here
34:46and stops right now.
34:57We are one nation, and their pain is our pain.
35:02Their dreams are our dreams,
35:04and their success will be our success.
35:09We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny.
35:16The oath of office I take today
35:19is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.
35:28For many decades, we've enriched foreign industry
35:32at the expense of American industry,
35:35subsidized the armies of other countries
35:38while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military.
35:44We've defended other nations' borders
35:47while refusing to defend our own.
35:56And spent trillions and trillions of dollars overseas
36:01while America's infrastructure has fallen
36:04into disrepair and decay.
36:08We've made other countries rich
36:11while the wealth, strength, and confidence of our country
36:16has dissipated over the horizon.
36:21One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores
36:26with not even a thought about the millions and millions
36:31of American workers that were left behind.
36:35The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes
36:40and then redistributed all across the world.
36:46But that is the past,
36:49and now we are looking only to the future.
37:02We assembled here today are issuing a new decree
37:07to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital,
37:11and in every hall of power.
37:14From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land.
37:20From this day forward, it's going to be only America first.
37:28America first.
37:36Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration,
37:41on foreign affairs will be made to benefit
37:45American workers and American families.
37:49We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries
37:54making our products, stealing our companies,
37:57and destroying our jobs.
38:06Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.
38:11I will fight for you with every breath in my body,
38:16and I will never, ever let you down.
38:22America will start winning again, winning like never before.
38:34We will bring back our jobs.
38:37We will bring back our borders.
38:40We will bring back our wealth.
38:43And we will bring back our dreams.
38:52We will build new roads and highways and bridges
38:57and airports and tunnels and railways
39:00all across our wonderful nation.
39:04We will get our people off of welfare and back to work,
39:09rebuilding our country with American hands and American labor.
39:16We will follow two simple rules,
39:20buy American and hire American.
39:27We will seek friendship and goodwill
39:30with the nations of the world,
39:32but we do so with the understanding
39:35that it is the right of all nations
39:38to put their own interests first.
39:41To put their own interests first.
39:44We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone,
39:48but rather to let it shine as an example.
39:52We will shine for everyone to follow.
40:00We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones
40:04and unite the civilized world
40:06against radical Islamic terrorism,
40:10which we will eradicate completely
40:13from the face of the earth.
40:21At the bedrock of our politics
40:23will be a total allegiance to the United States of America.
40:27And through our loyalty to our country,
40:30we will rediscover our loyalty to each other.
40:35When you open your heart to patriotism,
40:38there is no room for prejudice.
40:49The Bible tells us how good and pleasant it is
40:54when God's people live together in unity.
40:58We must speak our minds openly,
41:01debate our disagreements honestly,
41:04but always pursue solidarity.
41:08When America is united,
41:11America is totally unstoppable.
41:20There should be no fear.
41:23We are protected and we will always be protected.
41:27We will be protected by the great men and women
41:30of our military and law enforcement
41:33and, most importantly,
41:37we will be protected by God.
41:47Finally, we must think big and dream even bigger.
41:52In America, we understand that a nation
41:55is only living as long as it is striving.
42:00We will no longer accept politicians
42:03who are all talk and no action,
42:06constantly complaining but never doing anything about it.
42:18The time for empty talk is over.
42:22Now arrives the hour of action.
42:31Do not allow anyone to tell you that it cannot be done.
42:37No challenge can match the heart and fight
42:40and spirit of America.
42:43We will not fail.
42:45Our country will thrive and prosper again.
42:49We stand at the birth of a new millennium,
42:53ready to unlock the mysteries of space,
42:57to free the Earth from the miseries of disease
43:00and to harness the energies, industries,
43:03and technologies of tomorrow.
43:06A new national pride will stir our souls,
43:09lift our sights, and heal our divisions.
43:14It's time to remember that old wisdom
43:17our soldiers will never forget,
43:19that whether we are black or brown or white,
43:24we all bleed the same red blood of patriots.
43:35We all enjoy the same glorious freedoms,
43:39and we all salute the same great American flag.
43:48And whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit
43:53or the windswept plains of Nebraska,
43:56they look up at the same night sky,
43:59they fill their heart with the same dreams,
44:02and they are infused with the breath of life
44:06by the same almighty creator.
44:16So to all Americans, in every city near and far,
44:19small and large, from mountain to mountain,
44:22from ocean to ocean, hear these words.
44:26You will never be ignored again.
44:35Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams
44:39will define our American destiny,
44:43and your courage and goodness and love
44:46will forever guide us along the way.
44:49Together, we will make America strong again.
44:54We will make America wealthy again.
44:57We will make America proud again.
45:00We will make America safe again.
45:03And yes, together, we will make America great again.
45:09Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.
45:17God bless America.
45:47God bless America.
45:49At this time, I call on Rabbi Marvin Heyer,
46:17Reverend Franklin Graham, and Bishop Wayne T. Jackson
46:20to provide readings and the benediction.
46:36Eternal God, bless President Donald J. Trump
46:41and America, our great nation.
46:45Guide us to remember the words of the psalmist,
46:49who may dwell on your holy mountain,
46:53one who does what is right and speaks the truth.
46:58Who knows that when you eat the labor of your hands,
47:03you are praiseworthy, that he who sows in tears
47:09shall reap in joy, because the freedoms we enjoy
47:14are not granted in perpetuity,
47:17but must be reclaimed by each generation.
47:22As our ancestors have planted for us,
47:26so we must plant for others.
47:30While it is not for us to complete the task,
47:34neither are we free to desist from them.
47:38Dispense justice for the needy and the orphan,
47:42for they have no one but their fellow citizens,
47:46and because a nation's wealth is measured by her values
47:52and not by her vaults.
47:55Bless all of our allies around the world
47:59who share our beliefs.
48:01By the rivers of Babylon, we wept as we remembered Zion.
48:09If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill.
48:16The doer of all these shall never falter.
48:22May the days come soon when justice will dwell in the wilderness
48:28and righteousness will abide in the fertile fields,
48:33and the work of righteousness will be peace,
48:38quietness, and confidence forever.
48:42Amen.
48:53Mr. President, in the Bible, rain is a sign of God's blessing.
49:00And it started to rain, Mr. President, when you came to the platform.
49:05And it's my prayer that God will bless you, your family, your administration,
49:14and may he bless America.
49:18The passage of Scripture comes from 1 Timothy 2.
49:24I urge then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving
49:32be made for all people, for kings, for all those in authority,
49:38that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
49:44This is good, and it pleases God, our Savior,
49:49who wants all people to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.
49:54For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind,
50:00the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.
50:07Now to the king eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God,
50:14be honor and glory forever and ever, in Jesus' name, amen.
50:28We thank you, Father, for letting us share this great moment together.
50:34Let us not take for granted the air we breathe or the life you've given us.
50:39We were all created by you with one blood, all nations to dwell upon this land together.
50:46We're not enemies, we're brothers and sisters.
50:49We're not adversaries, but we're allies.
50:52We're not foes, but we're friends.
50:55Let us be healed by the power of your love and united by the bond of your spirit.
51:00Today we pray for our 45th president, the vice president, and their families
51:05to give them the wisdom to guide this great nation, the strength to protect it, and the hands to heal it.
51:11We bless President Donald J. Trump.
51:14We ask that you give him the wisdom of Solomon, the vision of Joseph, and the meekness of Christ.
51:20Solomon, who kept peace among many nations.
51:23Joseph, who dreamt better for the people.
51:25And Christ, who accepted us all.
51:28O Lord, mend our hearts and stitch together the fabric of this great country
51:33in the spirit of the legendary gospel songwriter Mahalia Jackson.
51:37O deep in my heart, I do believe.
51:40The Lord will see us through, I do believe.
51:43We are on our way to victory, I do believe.
51:47We will walk hand in hand, I do believe.
51:50We shall live in peace, I do believe.
51:53O deep in my heart, I do believe.
51:56America we shall overcome.
51:59May the Lord bless and keep America, make his face shine upon us,
52:03and be gracious unto us, and give us peace.
52:06In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
