00:00At least 70 people were killed and more than 230 injured in the Gaza Strip hours after
00:15a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas was
00:19confirmed.
00:26In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro signed a decree to carry out a constitutional reform
00:31in a democratic and participatory manner.
00:40And Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said on Wednesday that the decision of the
00:44United States government to remove Cuba from the list of countries that allegedly sponsor
00:49terrorism is a sign that its destabilization plans against the Caribbean island have failed.
01:02Hello and welcome to From the South, my name is Belén de los Santos, I'm from the Televisión
01:06Estudios in Caracas, Venezuela, begin with the news.
01:25And we begin with the situation in the Middle East.
01:27At least 70 people were killed and more than 230 injured in the Gaza Strip hours after
01:34a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas
01:38was confirmed.
01:39The Lebanese channel Al Mayadeen pointed out that in less than an hour the Israeli occupation
01:45intensified the intense attacks throughout the Gaza Strip.
01:48In this regard, they reported that at least 18 people were killed by new aerial bombardments
01:54against a residential building in western Gaza, while another similar event was reported
02:00where more than 30 people were killed by attacks by the Tel Aviv regime in the last
02:0524 hours.
02:07Also detailed that the Israeli regime is attacking several sites in the enclave despite the official
02:14announcement on Wednesday of a ceasefire between the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas
02:18and Israel after 15 months of ongoing genocide.
02:31And we now move on to other topics.
02:33In the United Kingdom, activists from the revolutionary communist group and allied organizations
02:37marched on Wednesday to the headquarters of The Guardian newspaper to protest the media
02:42manipulation of the Global South anti-imperialist struggles.
02:46Carrying flags from Venezuela, Palestine and Cuba, demonstrators denounced the London-based
02:51newspapers' misrepresentation of information, particularly pertaining the undermining of
02:57struggles that stand against British imperialist interests such as the coverage of Israel's
03:03genocide in Gaza.
03:05In this context, activists also condemned the media treatment of the January 10th presidential
03:10inauguration in Venezuela, where thousands went to the streets in support of the democratically
03:16elected President Nicolás Maduro, mobilizations that The Guardian failed to cover, instead
03:22focusing on proven fake news.
03:25...manipulated in the media, but you can see really clearly why when you look at Venezuela.
03:34Do you know that in the Bank of England, just a few miles from here, the Bank of England
03:41has stolen over $1 billion of Venezuelans' gold?
03:47$1 billion of Venezuelans' gold.
03:50Because they say that they don't recognize the elected government of Nicolás Maduro.
03:55They've been saying that since 2018.
03:59And instead of reporting the truth about Venezuela, the thousands of people who are out on the
04:06streets, the workers, the campesinos, the women, the grandparents, the youth, all of
04:14those people, the indigenous people, they were out on the streets, the trade unionists,
04:18they were supporting the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro, they were supporting the Venezuelan
04:25Bolivarian revolution, and they were not covered in the pages of The Guardian, nor the BBC,
04:32because for The Guardian and the BBC, the working class, the poor, the people of Venezuela
04:38are invisible.
04:39Well, it's our duty to make them visible, to tell the truth about what is happening
04:45in Venezuela.
04:48And the Prime Minister of Denmark, Matt Fredriksen, confirmed on Wednesday that the island of
04:53Greenland is not for sale.
04:55Her statements were made in a telephone conversation with the President-elect of the United States,
05:00Donald Trump.
05:01Fredriksen thus reiterated the words of Greenland's Premier, Muthvi Ejed, who stated that the
05:08island is not for sale.
05:09In this sense, the Danish Premier maintained that it is up to Greenland to decide on its
05:15independence.
05:16In this regard, she also indicated that Denmark is willing to strengthen security in the Arctic
05:21region, and emphasized the importance of this.
05:25The telephone conversation took place after the U.S. President-elect, Donald Trump, in
05:29recent weeks, declared his intention that Greenland, now a constituent nation of the
05:35Kingdom of Denmark, should become part of the United States.
05:48And we go now to South Africa, as police announced the end of the rescue operation at the Bafflest
05:54of the illegal gold mine in which 78 people were killed.
05:58The commissioner in charge stated that the extractions from the mine are complete.
06:03However, authorities will conduct a further subway sweep to ensure that no one else is
06:09inside the mine.
06:10Of the 246 people that were found alive, 128 were Mozambicans, 80 were from Lesotho, 33
06:20were from Zimbabwe, and 5 were South Africans.
06:24In November, the authorities launched an operation to expel the men who were mining illegally
06:30at the closed Bafflest of the gold mine, cutting off their food and water supply from the surface
06:36for a period of time.
06:46And the island of Banu Aru is holding early elections a month after a devastating earthquake
06:51struck the south of the Pacific nation.
06:53Local television footage showed queues of boaters in the capital, Porvila, on Thursday,
06:59although many are expected to be unable to boat because they have been displaced by the
07:05quake, which killed at least 14 people, injured some 210 and displaced thousands.
07:12Banu Aru elects a new 52-member parliament and leadership after early elections were
07:18called following the opposition's November vote of no confidence in President Nige-Nige
07:24Buravaburu and Prime Minister Charlotte Salve.
07:35And in China, the Ministry of Commerce announced that four new U.S. companies have been added
07:39to the list of untrustworthy entities for selling arms to Taiwan.
07:44The four companies in question are prohibited from engaging in import or export activities
07:49related to China and from making new investments within the country.
07:54These four companies join seven other companies already sanctioned by Beijing and banned from
08:00any import or export activities to or from the Asian giant.

08:35Welcome back to From the South.
08:42We continue with the information we go to Latin America as Venezuela's President Nicolás
08:47Maduro held on Wednesday his annual report speech to the nation.
08:51He both took stroke a balance of 2024 and provided a look forward to the year that has
08:57just started.
08:58Details of the presidential speech from our special Envoy Unisoner in Caracas.
09:05The Bolivarian Constitution requires the President to hold an annual speech in front of the National
09:10Assembly within 10 days of the beginning of the parliamentary year.
09:13Venezuela's President took a look back and emphasized economic recovery despite the U.S.
09:19sanctions regime.
09:24Regarding economic growth, according to already consolidated data and the preliminary projection
09:32of the Central Bank, it is that the growth of the economy in Venezuela 2024 exceeded
09:399% of the gross domestic product.
09:42Looking forward, the President announced new measures such as the establishment of a new
09:47Ministry of Foreign Trade, simplifying bureaucratic processes for exports and the introduction
09:52of a digital Venezuelan currency.
09:55Reforms in economy will be accompanied by those in the Constitution, Maduro said and
10:01I have decided to sign here, in this event, the creation of the National, Unitary and
10:13Inclusive Commission for Constitutional Reform.
10:16Usually the speech is held in the National Assembly but Maduro spoke in the cultural
10:21center of Teresa Carreño in Caracas, joined by thousands, a continuation of taking the
10:26presidential oath both in the parliament and later with the people.
10:33So let us get prepared so that all 38 parties nominate their candidates and very soon we
10:39will be in democratic normality, electing deputies, governors, legislators, mayors and
10:45municipality council members.
10:47Constitutional reform elections and a normal democratic life.
10:51For some observers, the President's main message was an invitation.
10:55We are going to invest all our money that we produce in the petroleum industry, in the
11:04agriculture industry, in the benefits and the happiness of our people.
11:12That's what socialism is about.
11:15So this message is very illustrating for the people in Venezuela that we have to get together
11:26and get united, you know, because we are all Venezuelan people.
11:31In his annual speech to the nation, President Maduro constructed bridges from the past to
11:36the future, from description to action, from government to opposition and from the presidency
11:42to the people.
11:43Yunus Soner, Delisur, Caracas, Venezuela.
11:49An inequitable electoral campaign for the presidential election set for February 9th
11:54is advancing amid the ongoing political and social crisis gripping the country.
11:59Political proselytism continues to develop despite the deepening rift between President
12:05Daniel Navarro and Vice President Veronica Abap, a conflict that escalated with Abap's
12:10recent removal from office.
12:12The government is also facing widespread public outcry following the tragic murder of four
12:18young people who were last seen in the custody of military personnel and later found dead.
12:24Meanwhile, a new crime has further rocked the province of El Oro with the assassination
12:30of acting Mayor Eber Ponce, the top authority of the Aranillas community who was shot multiple
12:37times while traveling in a vehicle.
12:40And nine years after the arbitrary detention of the social Argentinian leader Milagro Sala,
12:51several social, political and syndicalist organizations will carry out a caravan on
12:56January 16th to denounce the persecution of the social activist and demand her release.
13:01The caravan seeks not only to make visible the case of Sala, but also the broader context
13:07of political repression faced by popular organizations in Argentina.
13:11Milagro Sala, leader of the social organization Tupac Amaro, was arbitrarily detained under
13:17the miscellany arrest on January 16th of 2016 after participating in an encampment in front
13:25of the government house of Jujuy, where she was resisting the first measures of Governor
13:32Gerardo Morales.

14:08Welcome back to From the South, we continue with the information.
14:22Cuba's foreign minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla said on Wednesday that the decision
14:27of the United States government to remove Cuba from the list of countries that allegedly
14:31sponsor terrorism is a sign that the destabilization plans against the Caribbean island have failed.
14:37During a press conference in Havana, Rodríguez Parrilla denounced that the list is unilateral
14:43and arbitrary and lacks credibility and prestige on an international level.
14:48He also reiterated that the Cuban government has maintained and continues to maintain the
14:53firm and historic resolve to hold a respectful and responsible dialogue with Washington on
14:59the basis of equality, sovereignty and without interference in his country's internal affairs.
15:05The foreign minister highlighted the considerable humanitarian damage that the U.S. sanctions
15:09and blockade have had on Cuban families and praised the resilience of the Cuban people
15:15and government in the face of the U.S. hostile policies against the island.
15:27My opinion is that he took that decision because his plan has failed, because the vision of
15:32provoking the collapse of the Cuban economy, a social explosion and the implementation of
15:37Mr. Lesser Mallory's memorandum aimed at overthrowing the Cuban revolution through measures that bring about hunger,
15:53desperation and finally the government's fall, has not achieved its goals.
15:57It is true that the measures of the blockade as a whole, particularly its strengthening as of 2017 and especially the
16:15additional measures taken by the previous Republican government since the middle of 2019,
16:20have created very difficult circumstances to our economy.
16:27They have generated considerable humanitarian damage, have provoked hardship, anxiety, suffering to the Cuban families.
16:43However, neither the economy has collapsed nor the government has been overthrown.
16:49In this context, Bruno Rodríguez also referred about the relations between Cuba and the United States.
17:02The Cuban government has historically and persistently proposed respectful and responsible dialogues to the government of the United States of America
17:09on the basis of sovereign equality, reciprocal benefit,
17:15mutual respect and without interference in the internal affairs of our countries,
17:21and that has been said publicly and repeatedly by President Fidel Castro, by President Raúl Castro,
17:27by President Miguel Díaz-Canel and it has also been repeatedly said privately in a respectful way.
17:46We should ask the government of the United States why it has waited until now to do what it could have done
17:52and what many of its voters, including citizens of Cuban origin, have been waiting for since the election,
17:58because in his electoral platform the President committed himself to adopting significant changes in the United States policy on Cuba.
18:04And in Peru heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and hail have damaged nearly 30 homes in the capital of the state of Peru.
18:10changes in the United States' policy on Cuba.
18:28And in Peru, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and hail have damaged nearly 30 homes
18:34and affected several crops and animals in the province of Celindin, north of the country.
18:39According to the authorities, the layers of ice formed by the hail covered up to 5 centimeters
18:45of soil and grass, damaging corn, potato and bean crops.
18:49Some families in the area requested the assistance of other institutions such as the regional
18:54government of Cajamarca and the national government to assess the level of damage and find possible
19:00solutions and alternatives to this problem.
19:03Likewise, hail and strong winds caused the roofs of the most vulnerable houses to give
19:08way under the excess weight, forcing residents to evacuate while the storm passes.
19:21And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
