00:00Hyung!
00:03Sang-woo hyung!
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo.
00:07And today we're looking at Squid Game characters
00:09who met their demise earlier than expected.
00:11Players only.
00:18Be warned, major spoilers ahead.
00:21Ji-young.
00:22It's unfair that the ones we grow to love always seem to die early,
00:25but that's the heartbreaking reality of Squid Game.
00:30Let's end this with just one game.
00:35Bet everything.
00:36We really got to know Ji-young when she joined Gi-hun's team
00:39and became close to Sae-byeok.
00:41Their connection deepened during the marble game,
00:43where they shared their traumatizing stories.
00:53But just as we connected with Ji-young, we lost her.
00:56Like Sae-byeok.
00:57We were totally shaken when she sacrificed herself to save her only friend.
01:07Her tearful smile as she thanked Sae-byeok for playing with her
01:10made her loss even harder to bear.
01:12If we had our way,
01:14both friends would have lived long enough to enjoy the prize money.
01:17But the show had other plans.
01:29Player 196.
01:31In season two,
01:32Gi-hun re-enters the deadly competition to try and put an end to it.
01:36But as soon as he's let back in,
01:38his plan goes sideways.
01:40So he becomes determined to save his fellow contestants.
01:44As a result,
01:45the red light, green light game pans out differently,
01:47with his guidance saving scores of players from sudden death.
01:51Unfortunately, player 196 becomes the first casualty
01:54after a bee lands on her face.
02:14It sure feels like a deliberate move by the game creators to ensure panic and carnage.
02:20With her main character energy and Thanos clearly smitten with her,
02:24we figured she'd have a bigger role.
02:26But it wouldn't be Squid Game without some nasty surprises.
02:31Do Jung-soo.
02:32Sung-woo has done some terrible things,
02:34but this is one of his absolute worst.
02:44Why kill the one person who helped you get this far?
02:47We're talking about the death of So Jung-soo,
02:49player 17.
02:51He came so close to surviving the glass bridge game until Sung-woo robbed him of the chance.
03:04Using his expertise as a glass manufacturer,
03:06player 17 easily identified safe panels,
03:09helping others behind him survive.
03:12But after the front man turned off the light,
03:14his skill became almost useless.
03:16With time running out,
03:17Sung-woo made a callous move and pushed him off the panel.
03:21How utterly cruel.
03:23One more step and he may have reached the next game or even the finale.
03:26But Sung-woo's depravity ruined it all.
03:36Thanos.
03:36Bearing the name of the MCU's iconic villain is enough to make you stand out.
03:41Back that up with an extraordinary personality and you become unforgettable.
03:56Awful as he may be,
03:57Thanos was undeniably fascinating,
04:00dominating,
04:01and even threatening.
04:07His ecstatic approach to the games was bizarrely entertaining,
04:10even though it was also sad.
04:12Since the show sets him as a major antagonist,
04:15naturally, we thought he'd stick around longer.
04:20But boy, were we shocked in episode 6 when he was brutally stabbed.
04:24It's yet another reminder that in Squid Game,
04:26no one is safe,
04:28no matter how important they may seem.
04:31Same me.
04:31We get that Thanos is a villain,
04:34Same me.
04:35We get that many characters have to die,
04:38but killing one as intriguing as Sae-mi feels wrong.
04:47There's no denying that she was one of the most likable characters.
04:54A smart player,
04:55Sae-mi joined Thanos' team,
04:56thinking they'd be easy to control.
04:58But that backfired.
05:00After voting to end the game,
05:02she landed on Nam-gyu's target list,
05:04and was killed during the Lights Out riot.
05:08Was that unfitting death necessary at this point?
05:11With how the character was built,
05:13we thought she had so much more to offer.
05:15And we can't forget about her traumatized friend Min-soo.
05:18Well, just further evidence that Squid Game thrives on shocking us,
05:22not satisfying us.
05:25The last time we saw this struggling artist in the outside world,
05:28his daughter was battling cancer.
05:33So it wasn't surprising to see him in the game,
05:39desperate to win money for her treatment.
05:55Towards the end,
05:56he joins Gi-hun's rebellion,
05:57a decision that tragically seals his fate.
06:00As the shootout with the armed guards intensifies,
06:02Kyung-suk and other rebels soon run out of ammo.
06:05When Dae-ho fails to return with reinforcement,
06:08Kyung-suk surrenders.
06:09Despite pleading for his life to be spared for his daughter's sake,
06:12he is mercilessly shot.
06:14Though we aren't entirely sure if he's gone,
06:16his plan was likely doomed from the start,
06:19since the frontman was always one step ahead.
06:25Even knowing Squid Game's brutal nature,
06:28we can't help getting attached to certain characters,
06:30especially relatable ones like Young-mi.
06:51A sweet-natured girl,
06:52she formed an adorable friendship with Hyun-joo
06:55and became part of the show's most likable teams.
06:57But during the Mingle Challenge,
06:59tragedy struck.
07:00We can't even begin to explain how wild her death was.
07:04One minute Young-mi and her friends were racing to their secured room,
07:08the next, she was helpless on the floor.
07:10Hyun-joo tries to save her, but she's too late.
07:12If only there had been enough time.
07:14Honestly, her death feels painfully unfair,
07:17especially since she desperately wanted to leave.
07:20Those pleading eyes of hers still haunt us.
07:27Ali.
07:28Some might rationalize Sang-woo's actions,
07:31but for manipulating Ali during the Marble Game,
07:33he deserves to be labeled as an evil character.
07:48Poor Ali was too kind and pure for a game this ruthless.
07:52He managed to survive many brutal challenges,
07:55only to die in the most heartbreaking way.
08:03Perhaps if he hadn't been so trusting and compassionate,
08:06he may have lived longer.
08:15But as the violent show will have it,
08:17the last we see of Ali is his tearful face
08:19after realizing he's been duped.
08:21His death feels like the most unfortunate death
08:24and feels like the most unfair
08:25because no one lost quite like he did.
08:27And no, player one does not count.
08:29Surely Ali didn't deserve to die heartbroken and betrayed.
08:33Jung-bae.
08:34The front man strikes again,
08:36and this one hurts almost as much as Ali and Sae-byeok's deaths.
08:39Just like in season one,
08:41Gi-hun's friend enters the game.
08:42Except he's unlike Sang-woo and we actually like him.
08:46As Gi-hun's strongest ally,
08:48Jung-bae was on his team from day one
08:50and didn't hesitate to join his uprising,
08:52only to meet a grim end.
09:04While on their way to the control room,
09:06the front man asks Gi-hun to join him.
09:16Shooting Jung-bae right in front of Gi-hun
09:18as a way to completely crush him.
09:20It's devastating and shocking.
09:27And honestly, Gi-hun is partly to blame.
09:30His half-baked plan arguably led many to their deaths.
09:33But then again,
09:34if Jung-bae had voiced his suspicions about player one,
09:37perhaps this tragic turn could have been avoided.

09:57After the glass panel exploded,
09:59it left the remaining players injured,
10:01but none more so than this fan favorite.
10:03Bleeding profusely,
10:05it doesn't look like Sae-byeok will make it through the night.
10:13Since she's badly wounded,
10:21Gi-hun goes to find help,
10:26but then we get a gut-wrenching revelation.
10:28Sang-woo attacks again,
10:30stabbing Sae-byeok with a hidden knife to further his odds of victory.
10:40Imagine being so close to winning
10:42only for a shard of glass to ruin your chance,
10:45and then as you're clinging to life,
10:47a ruthless rival takes it away.
10:49That doesn't seem fair at all,
10:51and Sae-byeok seriously deserved so much better.
10:54But when has fairness been a thing in this brutal world?
10:57Which death hurts the most in Squid Game?
