00:00Today, we will return to the inspiring story of memory athlete Chloe Galamgam,
00:05football player Darin Cervantes,
00:07and the actress Mimi Villarreal in Meg's Live Better.
00:13Let's watch it.
00:30This afternoon, we will watch the journey of memory athlete Chloe Galamgam
00:44from her first steps in the memory sport,
00:47how she used it as a tool in life,
00:50and how she challenged herself as a leader.
00:54This is her story.
01:00How she discovered her love for the memory sport.
01:22My parents knew about memory sports even when I was younger.
01:26They just waited for me to be at the right age to start training.
01:31And when they introduced me to memory sports,
01:34I thought, oh, it's so cool, so interesting.
01:37I've never heard about it before.
01:39And so I decided to start training.
01:42And I had a lot of fun during training.
01:45And especially on my first competition, I was able to achieve a lot of awards.
01:51And that's what really inspired me to continue memory sports.
01:56And here I am.
01:58Young people face various social pressures and self-doubt.
02:04I would say that I'm a shy person.
02:08I'm usually quiet.
02:10I usually don't talk to other people unless I'm talked to.
02:14But something that I would say would be good about me
02:18is I try to overcome that.
02:22And I try to be more open to new things to overcome that struggle.
02:29I guess I think of what other people would think of me.
02:34Like they would think how good I am or how bad I am at something.
02:38And that's something that I'm pretty scared about.
02:42And I guess that's why I tend to be quiet.
02:45So that people won't think of me too much.
02:48And that's why usually I'm just sitting down quiet.
02:54So that I won't have to interact with other people and worry about that.
02:58Growing up, since I'm the atep, I'm the panganay,
03:03I have the responsibility to be a good role model to my siblings.
03:11So I have that sort of pressure on me to have good grades, to achieve big goals.
03:19And that's something that growing up, it's been pressured on me.
03:25And even until now, it's something that I've been experiencing.
03:30I guess I would say that I do get anxious.
03:33I get worried a lot.
03:36I guess sometimes I do cry.
03:38Feeling overwhelmed by that kind of pressure.
03:43We push her.
03:45Knowing Chloe, we know she's a very shy type of person.
03:49So when she was young, she was the quiet type.
03:52Wherever you put her, she would just be there.
03:55She wouldn't move.
03:57So to develop her personality, we really push her to join activities.
04:03And I think she's enjoying it.
04:05Since she was in grade 1, she's becoming a leader in her class.
04:11So we think she can excel in terms of that.
04:16Maybe that's the feeling that she's pressured.
04:19Maybe in our opinion, it's not like that.
04:22We just push her.
04:23She just has that feeling.
04:26Maybe that's what she thinks is pressure on her.
04:31I think maybe since she's the eldest,
04:34since she's the eldest, we know she can do all the training.
04:39So we let her try.
04:42Maybe from that, since she has a lot of training and experience,
04:48we tell her that she has to teach her younger siblings
04:54what she learned before.
04:56Maybe that's what she feels.
05:00Maybe as an older sister,
05:03that's what I think her feeling is,
05:06that I have to teach what I've learned from these trainings to my younger siblings.
05:13Sports gives you a purpose in life and strengthens your self-confidence.
05:20When I join competitions, I really have that determination to reach my goals.
05:27And having to have the discipline to train and to set and reach those goals,
05:33it helped me build my confidence in reaching other goals outside of memory sports
05:40and the discipline, it helped me with that as well.
05:43Learning memory techniques has helped me in academics.
05:47It helped me focus on my lessons more, having that discipline to train.
05:54It helped me with my discipline and study habits as well.
05:58And joining many memory competitions, it helped me gain confidence as well,
06:05academically and socially, especially in leadership.
06:09Having to set goals for competitions helped me set goals in academics and leadership roles.
06:19Chloe is quiet during training, but when the training starts,
06:24you can see her enthusiasm, passion, and determination.
06:29You can see how good a player is not just inside the competition or our training grounds.
06:35What separates her from other players is that even after classes, she still trains at home.
06:44That's where the mastery of memory athletes comes in.
06:48At the same time, we noticed that when she started, she was very shy.
06:54But now, there's a big improvement in her personality, the way she answers,
07:01and the way she encourages other players.
07:05I would consider her as one of the ambassadors in memory sports
07:11because even though she has a lot of achievements, she's still very humble.
07:16At the same time, during the competitions, she's not shy around new players.
07:24When she sees a new player, she smiles.
07:28She's still friendly.
07:30She doesn't look at another memory athlete as a competitor,
07:35but she looks at another memory athlete as a part of the community,
07:40as someone she can be friends with.
07:45In the youth ministry, I've been volunteering in the retreat camps
07:51and taking leadership roles in volunteering.
07:55And having the comfort people in that ministry really helped me as well
08:02with my struggles and learning different things together as a community.
08:10As a parent, it's important to understand your child's struggles.
08:16I think it's a lesson that now that we know that she's feeling pressured.
08:22More on support, moral support, all kinds of support.
08:27Actually, now she's a member of the Timothy group, a youth group,
08:31so she has a new outlet.
08:34Maybe her pressure from that is lessened since it's a Christian ministry.
08:43So she started being a leader there.
08:46So I think it's one way to give her support, not only from us, her family.
08:53So she has another outlet to give her support since she's a member of the prayer ministry.
09:02Advice to parents, first of all, know the capability of the kids.
09:08Support them in what they like.
09:10Because, of course, it's trial and error, right?
09:13So we can try different things, but if we know that's where our kids will excel,
09:21maybe we have to support them all the way.
09:27Not just by giving what their needs are.
09:30To be there to help them, to support them, to guide them
09:35so that they can be successful in whatever way or career they choose.
09:44First, never give up.
09:46With whatever you're going through, just know that you can overcome it.
09:51Believe in yourself.
09:52No matter what may come to you, just stay strong.
09:56And try to overcome anxiousness, weariness, by joining other activities.
10:02Finding the people that you will feel comfortable with
10:05so that you may be able to overcome your struggles, not alone, but with other people.
10:12Today's youth are facing severe social pressures and self-doubt
10:17caused by social media and people around them.
10:21Sports is an excellent way to teach discipline, to help, and to have a goal.
10:29With the support and love of the family, their foundation becomes stronger.
10:34In combination with the sports and support of the family,
10:38the youth become ready to face and succeed in whatever challenges in life.
