00:00 [BIRDS CHIRPING]
00:03 Hi, Marcia.
00:17 Nice to see you again.
00:18 Nice to see you again.
00:19 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:22 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:25 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:28 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:31 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:34 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:37 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:40 Well, you've had a busy week.
00:41 [LAUGHTER]
00:44 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:46 It was beautiful weather.
00:47 Amazing ceremony.
00:48 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:51 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:54 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:57 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:00 Your Majesty, thank you so much for inviting me to kick-end
01:04 this year.
01:04 It's been great.
01:05 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:07 Oh, it's happening.
01:08 I just got the most wonderful chat with the man
01:10 that we've been talking about the--
01:11 Yes!
01:12 --who's just happened to have great friends with Catherine
01:14 Goodman.
01:14 We just gave a big party for her at the Royal Drawing School
01:17 at my house in Los Angeles.
01:19 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:22 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:25 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:28 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:31 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:34 I'm used to standing on a big stage,
01:36 and then I walk through the courtyard.
01:37 [LAUGHTER]
01:39 OK, thanks.
01:40 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
01:42 At this point, I'm introducing you to the number one New York
01:44 Times best-selling author, Emily Giffen,
01:46 who is your biggest fan.
01:47 And she is-- she is so excited to be here.
01:50 I came over for your coronation.
01:52 I just told my--
01:53 Did you cry, Mom?
01:54 Yes, I slept on the street for two nights.
01:55 You did?
01:56 I did.
01:57 I did.
01:57 I did.
01:58 I'm so proud of you.
01:59 It's an honor of my lifetime.
02:01 So thank you.
02:02 And thank you for all you've done for me.
02:03 I've had a school in New York.
02:05 Yes, she's told you all--
02:06 All of it.
02:07 Yes.
02:08 She's in--
02:08 She's in Cobo.
02:09 Yes, to declaring status, which-- but I messed up all--
02:13 He's very sorry that we didn't allow--
02:15 [LAUGHTER]
02:16 I'm sorry, guys.
02:17 He-- he-- he got it right.
02:20 I'd be horrified.
02:21 [LAUGHTER]
02:23 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:24 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:25 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:26 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:27 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:28 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:29 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:30 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:31 [LAUGHTER]
02:32 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:35 Yes, you said-- you tell people that you found me in the
02:38 kitchen making a cup of coffee.
02:40 And I haven't got the nerve to deny your story,
02:43 which is totally untrue.
02:44 You've shared it with so many people.
02:46 [LAUGHTER]
02:47 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
02:48 [LAUGHTER]
02:51 I've got-- yeah, I'm now three years into it.
02:54 And I've got my scans on Monday and the results on Wednesday.
02:58 And you probably have the same routine of scans and checking.
03:01 Yeah, yeah.
03:02 It's very difficult.
03:03 The word that I never heard before was "scan dieting."
03:06 So you've-- you've seen the three months.
03:08 Yeah.
03:09 Yeah.
03:10 And you get to the point on Monday,
03:12 and I'll be very nervous about it.
03:14 And then Wednesday, you see what happens.
03:16 And then they give me another three months.
03:18 Thank you.
03:19 You look very well, too.
03:20 Yeah, yeah.
03:21 May we-- may we compliment each other for the rest of our lives.
03:24 [LAUGHTER]
03:25 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
03:26 And now, ladies and gentlemen, Vicky Perrin,
03:31 chief executive of the Queen's Reading Room.
03:34 Let me say what a pleasure it has been to host today,
03:38 celebrating the power of the written word.
03:42 The authors who have joined us here today
03:45 represent some of the world's finest creative minds,
03:49 whose stories transport us, entertain us,
03:54 and show us our commonality with new characters
03:57 and new adventures.
03:59 And at the same time, 60% of the UK adult population
04:03 say that their screen time--
04:05 [LAUGHTER]
04:06 [INTERPOSING VOICES]
04:32 And it's a wonderful initiative created
04:35 by Her Majesty the Queen.
04:37 And we are so thrilled that she is here with us tonight.
04:40 So yes, well done, Your Majesty.
04:42 Thank you so much for being here.
04:44 [APPLAUSE]
04:46 Some of you are writing here, as you remember.
04:51 A lovely lady who lived well into her 90s
04:53 and read voraciously, learned poetry.
04:57 And this play didn't start on a card.
04:59 He'd written it.
05:00 And I did.
