00:00 Let's talk about present day. Kamala Harris, as we know, has made history as the first woman vice
00:05 president, as well as the first person of color to be vice president. How much is she worth?
00:10 We're estimating that Kamala Harris today is worth about eight million dollars. Again,
00:16 that includes her her husband and that increase, which, you know, up from seven million in 2021,
00:22 up from six million in 2019. That's largely due to an increase in the value of the L.A. home that
00:27 she shares with her husband, Doug Emhoff, as well as the addition of a federal pension that she
00:32 recently became eligible for. The rest of her fortune actually looks remarkably similar to
00:36 where it was in 2021. So can you talk about the other assets that make up this net worth?
00:42 So we already talked about this roughly a million dollars of pensions that she has from state and
00:47 local government. There's also a federal pension that she recently became eligible for. That's
00:50 worth about one hundred fifty thousand dollars. The biggest asset in their portfolio is their
00:55 Los Angeles home. It's their only piece of real estate left in their portfolio right now. It's
01:01 worth about four point four million dollars for estimating with about two million dollars of debt
01:06 on it. The rest of that is all, you know, a variety of investments in retirement accounts,
01:11 you know, in her husband's IRA, that kind of stuff. They've got, you know,
01:16 several million dollars of that kind of thing. And what is her salary as vice president?
01:23 Harris makes a little over two hundred thirty five thousand dollars as vice president,
01:27 and that salary has actually been frozen at that level since at least twenty nineteen.
01:30 And her and Doug Emhoff moved into the vice president's residence when she and Joe Biden
01:38 took office, but they ended up selling some of their real estate. Talk about that and the money
01:43 behind there. So they sold two properties soon after Harris became vice president.
01:50 You know, they were able to move into the vice president's residence, which they don't own,
01:53 but they also don't have to pay for. So they offloaded some of their extra real estate.
01:57 Harris had an apartment in San Francisco where she this is where she grew up. This is where she
02:01 rose in politics. But she sold off her last piece of real estate there in twenty twenty one for
02:06 eight hundred sixty thousand dollars. That's a pretty hefty profit over what she paid for it.
02:10 Twenty three years earlier, she sold it for five hundred sixty thousand dollars more.
02:15 And then the next thing that was sold also in twenty twenty one was that same D.C. apartment.
02:19 And she sold that one for about what they paid for it. So actually, in actuality,
02:23 they probably lost money on that apartment because of interest payments they had to pay
02:27 on their mortgage. She's written some books between 2009 and 2019. How much money did
02:34 she make from those? Yep, I've got her book list here. So she's got a twenty nineteen memoir called
02:40 The Truths We Hold. She's got a twenty nineteen kids book called Superheroes Are Everywhere,
02:44 and she's got a 2009 criminal justice policy book called Smart on Crime. And so those three titles,
02:51 they made her quite a bit of money in twenty twenty twenty one. She made three hundred fifty
02:56 thousand dollars approximately in twenty twenty four hundred fifty thousand dollars in twenty
03:00 twenty one. But after the sort of the hype of her becoming elected or being elected vice president,
03:05 died down a little bit, that income stream was cut off significantly. And so that trickled to
03:10 eighty thousand dollars in twenty twenty two and just eighty five hundred dollars in twenty twenty
03:14 three, which is our most recent disclosure. So is there any indication of what she did
03:19 with that money as well as the money that she made with Doug Emhoff from selling those properties?
03:24 It's kind of unclear. It doesn't really show up very well in the disclosures that we have since
03:30 she became vice president. You know, on the one hand, these disclosures are pretty opaque.
03:35 They only have to politicians only have to report these sort of broad ranges. And so we don't
03:40 actually know exactly how much she maybe if it had been distributed across a number of different
03:46 investments, it might not show up very easily. So, you know, it's difficult to say, but suffice
03:53 to say, most of her financial assets look fairly similar to what they look like in twenty twenty
