00:35 wanted to expand our palette.

00:36 And we wanted to open up the show into the city even more.

00:44 Our story expands in a way that creates this vast chest

00:48 The characters are trying to see how things connect.

01:33 One of the things that was most challenging about this season

01:36 was that our production plan was to shoot

01:38 blocks of two episodes.

01:40 But episode two picks up three months later.

01:42 It's a complete reset.

01:44 Samantha has just opened her new club.

01:46 Sato is healthy.

01:48 And Jake is no longer pursuing yakuza.

01:50 I'm keeping my nose clean.

01:52 As you said, other crimes to be exposed.

01:54 We have two main new characters this season.

01:57 At the beginning of season two, Hayama

02:00 gets pulled in by Ishida.

02:02 And it's a terrible fit from the start.

02:18 would shake up and challenge existing leads that we've

02:21 come to know and like to see them in a different light.

02:23 So for Katagiri, we created the role of Nagata.

02:37 Another area where we wanted to go deeper

02:42 is in the nightlife and the world of the hostess clubs.

02:46 Sam is opening her club.

02:48 But really, it's sort of an illusion

02:50 because she's made a deal with the yakuza.

02:54 For Club Paulina, I worked very closely

02:56 with Kikuo Ota, our brilliant production designer.

02:59 And from the very beginning, we wanted it to be more Japanese

03:03 in its aesthetic.

03:06 In the first series, a lot of the dresses I wore

03:20 were '90s cape moss.

03:23 Japanese women, as a mama's son, typically wear kimono.

03:26 Kazuko Kurosawa created the most gorgeous dresses for me.

03:30 They took the style of painted fabrics

03:33 and made these really gorgeous dresses for Sam as mama's son

03:38 that still had that structure of a kimono

03:41 but was maybe more appropriate for a Western actor to wear.

03:45 Season one, we are telling a story about,

03:53 careful what you wish for.

03:55 In season two, our paradigm was crossing the Rubicon.

03:59 The Rubicon, the river that must be crossed,

04:01 is what am I willing to do to help keep alive the people I

04:04 love, and what does that leave me at?

04:07 You know, this is a really bad idea.

04:09 Everything you do has consequences,

04:10 and I think Jake starts realizing more and more,

04:12 everything I've done has had these consequences.

04:15 In Jake, there was a sense of moth to the flame of violence

04:18 and a pull towards the darkness.

04:21 All through season two, we're telling a story

04:23 of a young person growing up and the sort of pain of growth,

04:27 the pain for our young Sato, our young Samantha, Jake.

04:30 This is the story of how hard it is to grow up.

04:33 Having responsibility changes things.

04:35 And looking at all of our principal characters

04:37 in season two, they are deeply changed.

04:40 They've all been through life-altering experiences,

04:43 and now it's a real big reset to send them off

04:46 on new adventures.

04:47 The new people that they've become

04:49 or the ways in which they've changed

04:51 is really the driving force behind the stories

04:54 that happen in season two.
