Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar - Metallic Kandy Orange ( & Olympic White (\r
\r
Darryl walks you through all the great features on the Johnny Marr jag that makes it one of the greatest guitars Fender has ever produced. Listen and watch as we breakdown the new controls and hardware features Johnny Marr requested for his signature model. Its truly a completely redesigned Jaguar. \r
\r
Specs: \r
\r
Specialized features of the Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar Electric Guitar include custom-wound, Bare Knuckle Johnny Marr single-coil neck and bridge pickups; custom-shaped maple neck with rosewood fingerboard based on Marrs 1965 Jaguar; vintage-style truss rod; lacquer finish; and Marrs signature on the front of the headstock. The 4-position blade-style pickup switch is mounted to the lower-horn chrome plate (bridge; bridge and neck in parallel; neck, bridge, and neck in ) while 2 upper-horn slide switches control pickup brightness. Other distinctive features include a Jaguar bridge with Mustang saddles and nylon bridge post inserts for improved stability; vintage-style, floating tremolo tailpiece with chrome cover; and taller tremolo arm with arm-sleeve nylon insert to prevent arm swing.\r
\r
Marr is best known, of course, as the strikingly dynamic and influential anti-hero guitarist-arranger-allaround-musical-wunderkind behind Manchester quartet the Smiths, which virtually redefined and ruled U.K. pop throughout the 1980s. A master of melody, layering, and texture, Marr has always brought his own instantly identifiable ringing, jangling genius to the proceedings, as he has done in post-Smiths stints with The The, Electronic, the Pretenders and Johnny Marr and the Healers, and right up to the present with Modest Mouse, the Cribs and innumerable guest appearances.\r

00:50Hey, this is Daryl at Chicago Music Exchange, and today I'm going to be giving a detailed
00:54review of my new favorite guitar here at Chicago Music Exchange, the Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar.
01:00First off, you're not going to find Fender pickups in this guitar. What you're going to find are pickups
01:04wound by a company called Bare Knuckle. They're a high-end boutique pickup company who have wound
01:09these to Johnny Marr's specs based off one of his favorite Fender Jaguars. Now, these pickups in
01:14comparison to standard Jaguar pickups are going to be throatier, louder, and have a lot more top-end
01:20bite to them. The Johnny Marr Jaguar is not your typical Jaguar. It's got some modifications that
01:28make it much more usable in different situations. The pickups, for instance, we've done away with the
01:38traditional Jaguar setup. I'm going to go through some of the pickup selections right now. All right,
01:44in the first position, it's both pickups in parallel. In the second position is the neck pickup. The
01:52third position is both pickups in series, which is more of a traditional Jaguar sound. And then the
02:00fourth position is just the bridge pickup. So the sound of both pickups in parallel is like this.
02:15Now, this is the neck pickup. This is both pickups in series.
02:36And finally, this is the bridge pickup.
02:49Now, on top of the modified wiring situation, we've also got a totally different control system
02:57on the upper horn. What is usually here on your standard Jaguar is the jazz position, which is much
03:05darker. This is the opposite situation. This is a switch that engages the low-pass filter, which
03:11is usually right here. This is much better to have right here than the jazz position,
03:17because players would typically hit the switch while playing, as everyone knows, and it would
03:23totally muffle the guitar. It's not something you want to happen. A lot of times, players would duct
03:28tape this position up. Here, we don't have to worry about it, because this is a lower profile switch.
03:33It's harder to accidentally hit. And if you do hit it, you don't really notice any top end gone. You
03:40just
03:40end up cutting out the low end. So this is a universal high-pass filter, and it's applied to all
03:47positions. So this is what it sounds like, to give you a reference, this is what it sounds like without
03:51the filter. And this is what it sounds like with the filter.
04:11In addition to the universal high-pass filter, there's a second switch that's only engaged when
04:15you're in the parallel position. Now, with both pickups in parallel, you're going to get a louder,
04:20darker, more brutal sound. With the switch engaged, it will scoop some lows and mids and give you a
04:26brighter, janglier tone. Another thing that sets this Jaguar apart is the tremolo system.
04:33The arm insert has a bushing installed, which basically keeps the arm from wobbling back and forth.
04:39Also, it keeps the arm in position. So if you want to set the arm over the controls,
04:45over the pickup, or even over the bridge, it will stay exactly where you put it.
04:50Okay, so we're down here at the repair shop at Chicago Music Exchange, and I've got both a stock
04:54Fender Mustang bridge and the Johnny Marr Jaguar Mustang bridge. One of the age-old modifications for a
05:00Jag or a Jazzmaster was to put a Mustang bridge on because the saddles were riveted, and if you played
05:05too hard, you'd knock the string out. Another problem, though, with a Mustang bridge, even,
05:10is there's a lot of play in the height adjustment screw. So if you played the guitar too hard or
05:15if
05:16you played it often, you found that your bridge would sink as you were playing and you'd have to
05:20raise it. Well, the Johnny Marr bridge has a couple of modifications, the first of which being nylon
05:25bushings on the end of the posts. What these bushings do is they lock the height adjustment screw.
05:30So no matter how hard you play or how often you play, the bridge will stay exactly where you want
05:35it. Another thing that these bushings do is they keep the bridge from leaning forward or backwards
05:42after you've used the tremolo, leaving it tuned the same way it was before you used the tremolo.
05:47Now the saddle pieces too are a higher grade metal. A Fender stock bridge for a Mustang has a zinc
05:55alloy
05:55saddle. The Johnny Marr Jaguar bridge has steel saddles, which are much better for sustain and give you a
06:02much clearer tone. And today we're going to be using the Deluxe Memory Man 550T. It's a great all analog
06:08delay pedal with tap tempo, an expression pedal out, a send and a return, and we're going to be playing
06:14through the Tone King Imperial. So let's hear another song with the Johnny Marr Jaguar.
06:18Tone King Imperial.
