Introduced for the 1996 model year (late 1995 in Europe), the Nissan Skyline GT-R was a high-performance variant of the R33 Skyline. The R33 GT-R succeeded the R32 GT-R, and featured a lightly updated version of it's predecessor's RB26DETT engine.

Rear view of an R33 GT-R. The E-BCNR33 (R33) was developed even as the non GT-R R33 models went on sale in August 1993 (with a prototype being shown at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show) for release in 1995 as a successor to the R32 model. The engine in the R33 was nearly identical to the R32.

R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R. This was the base model of the R33’s GTR trim. It came with the twin-turbo RB26DETT engine with a power output of 301 horsepower and 275 lb-ft. The power output was advertised as 276 horsepower. The R33 GT-R came either with a 5-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual.

The R33 was offered in coupe and sedan body styles, as well as in a range of variants with notable examples such as the GTS, GTS25-T, and the legendary GT-R. The R33 Skyline was built until 1998, and was succeeded by the R34 Skyline for the 1999 model year.
