MAVLink has been used since 2009 to communicate between many different vehicles, ground stations (and other nodes) over varied and challenging communication channels (high latency/noise).

MAVLink is used as the communication protocol in many projects, which may mean there is some compatibility between them. A tutorial explaining basics of MAVLink has been written.
