Making a tapered gib - The Hobby-Machinist
Oct 25, 2021 · The length of the finished gib will be 12.25”. It is .355” on the thick end and 0.213” on the thin end (0.0116” taper per inch). The dovetail angle is 60 degrees. I’ve studied the chapter in the Connelly book where he discussed gib construction. In the example he gives, he suggests making the gib 3” longer than it’s finished length.
Making a gib for my lathe- - The Hobby-Machinist
Sep 5, 2019 · What type of gib are you making? I have seen two types of gib design, one where the gib is adjusted by a series of set screws and a second where the gib is tapered and adjusted by moving the gib lengthwise in a similarly tapered space. The first type really only has one critical surface, the side that contacts the moving dovetail.
Need suggestions/coaching with making a lathe gib
Dec 1, 2013 · The original cross-slide gib on my Chinese 9 X 20 (yes, I know that these are not good machine tools, but it is what I have) is too narrow for the slot it fits into. So, I had ordered a piece of brass 3/8" thick and long and wide enough to machine the new gib from (I …
Sherline Lathe Problem (GiB) | The Hobby-Machinist
Nov 9, 2024 · I’ve owned my Sherline 4000 Lathe for about 3 years. Never had any issues with the GiB adjustments till I installed the DRO kit. Since you need to disassemble the Lathe in several areas, I decided to do a good clean of everything & lubricate. I immediately noticed that my “Z” Axis dial was EXTREMELY HARD to turn. It will turn & the screw ...
Atlas craftsman 12 inch lathe gib | The Hobby-Machinist
Jun 6, 2022 · The width, thickness, and length can all be measured off of your lathe. This gib is not likely to make much of a negative impact if you don't hit the dimensions perfectly. It will not change the position of the carriage, since the reference geometry for the carriage position is the front edge of the front-most way.
How do you adjust gibs | The Hobby-Machinist
Dec 1, 2024 · The gib strip should be sized to closely fit the space top-to-bottom: it's adjusted side-to-side so the top slide dovetails fit closely. On some inexpensive lathes the gib strip is a little small (or the dovetails not machined correctly) and the strip can actually tilt, making adjustment almost impossible:
Need suggestions/coaching with making a lathe gib
Dec 1, 2013 · Because it binds the slide in some spots, movement is hard and sticky, again in some places along the slide's movement, the gib screws need to be screwed in quite a bit to hold it in place, the gib is/was bowed ( I tossed it aside after repeated attempts to straighten it with my 12 ton press only made the problem worse ) so much that it is obvious when you look at it without even laying it on ...
Mini Lathe Cross Slide Bearing Mod | The Hobby-Machinist
Aug 22, 2014 · By "back against the lathe" do you mean sandwiching the bushing between the 2 bearings? Cross slide -> bearing -> bushing -> bearing -> dial -> handle I can make a prototype out of scrap aluminum rod. If I can't figure a way to hold it on the lathe then maybe I can cut the flat using an endmill in my drill press if I shave off very tiny amounts.
Cross and compound slide gibs | The Hobby-Machinist
Jul 10, 2021 · If the lathe is new or has low wear, I would expect them to not sit as deep, since they are tapered gibs, as there would be less adjustment needed. I adjust my gib depth (screw) until I have a balance between effort to move the slides and side to side play. I can eliminate all the play on my slides, but then they become very hard to move.
Tapered gibs for the mini lathe saddle - The Hobby-Machinist
Jul 9, 2021 · I looked at the Grizzly G8688, and it has the same type of gib adjustment as my own Grizzly 12x14 lathe and both of Grizzly 9x20 lathes I've owned. Here's how I adjusted the gibs: 1. If the gib pressure screws are anything other than hex socket grub screws, start off by replacing them. It's rally hard to get a screwdriver to stay in the slot ...
