Jun 17, 2009 · Ive seen( on craigslist) a 1978 cj5 with a 304 and a 3 speed on 38 S.S's, and a 9in lift. Fiberglass tub, looks pretty nice. Iv never drove a 304 or a 3 speed can u give me some ideas on how the ride will be, MPG, is it a good buy and any other info.

Dec 19, 2009 · The displacement of one cylinder on a 304 is getting pretty small for a typical 1 5/8 header to pick up gains on the low end of things in factory trim. Now, an 1 1/2 inch primary, long tube header set up the way I mentioned earlier would probably pick up considerable torque over a factory manifold.

Dec 2, 2011 · My "refreshed" 304 with 60000 miles on it, 35 BFG KM/2's, 4.10 gears 4 speed T18 tranny consistently gets 11-13 mpg. We drove 3 hours in 4th gear to our last jeep Jamboree and I got 14.4 mpg and was telling everyone I had a hybrid. HAHA

Apr 25, 2007 · The 304 gets a bad name because its HP #'s are not much better than the I6. When people think v8, v6 power isn't what they're thinking about. But the 304 is supposed to have better torque, which is a good thing. Depending on who you talk to, some will say the engine is a total dog, others say they are great.

May 23, 2010 · I have a 1979 CJ-7 with the AMC 304 V8. My jeep dealer replaced the plugs, cap and rotor, plugs, spark plug wires and vacuum lines in a major tune up, and completely rebuilt the carburetor, tuning it so it would use less gas to the extent possible as well. I am getting 11 mph on the last two tankfuls since.
