The EMD GP40 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1965 and December 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 16-cylinder engine generating 3,000 hp (2,240 kW).

FWIW, all high hood GP40's were built for NW. The high hood GP40's that Guilford owns are units that had been sold off by NS to Helm leasing and Helm traded the 6 units to Guilford for their 5 SD40's.

GP40s with dynamic brakes featured a prominent bulge on the center of the long hood, with a 48” fan on top. Another variant on GP40s, as on other diesels too, was a high short hood (also commonly called a “high nose,” although as we shall see that is not technically correct).

The GP40 was a versatile locomotive that could be found across the US hauling drag freights over mountain passes and leading high-speed intermodal trains across flat terrain. Three rooftop radiator fans at the rear of the long hood differentiate a GP40 from its lower horsepower counterpart, the GP38, which has two fans at this location.

I bought a high hood from CMR of eBay and cut the low nose off of my go40-2 and started to roughly place he nose with the body. Got some loose plastic I need to shave/sand off but overall I'm happy so far. I can't seem to find the sill for the gp40 so I used a old gp38 I had laying around.

May 25, 2008 · Great looking model. Didn't know there were any high hood GP40's. One thing before you paint. Look at the fan housings,they are reversed on the Aristo model. Should be lower one on dynamic brake and taller on hood end. Your prototype photos show it pretty clear. I have brought this up before on the Aristo forum about the SD45 and now the GP40.
