Antigone and Ismene are the sisters of the dead Polynices and Eteocles. In the opening of the play, Antigone brings Ismene outside the palace gates late at night for a secret meeting: Antigone wants to bury Polynices' body, in defiance of Creon's edict, as the Greeks believed that to omission of proper burial rights is an insult to human dignity.

Creon blamed Polynices for bringing death and destruction to Thebes, and so he ordered that none of the attackers, Polynices included, were to be buried; anyone disobeying this edict would themselves be put to death.
