Dec 8, 2007 · It depends on the damascus alloys a bit. Stainlees damascus takes a stronger acid. I assume you do not have stainless. A mix of nickel and high carbon is common or nickel alloy like 15n20 and 1095 is very common. The nickel alloys etch slower and remain brighter than the straight carbon alloys.
Steel combination suggestions for damascus... - BladeForums.com
Oct 27, 2005 · I've only been using 1084/15N20 for my damascus. I've also got 1080, L6, W2 and just a wee little bit (ok, maybe a mountain of) 52100. I've used the 1084/15N20 because I learned with that combination and know that it will make a quality damascus. Do any of you have suggestions on combinations that I can experiment with from the list above?

Jul 10, 2003 · On a cheap/user knife, you could try 000 steel wool and oil, or Flitz, but both would reduce the contrast of the etch, on a damascus Fisk, I'd follow RWS' advice and have Jerry do it, but of course, Jerry is a busy guy, it may take a while. Pakistani Damascus knife is impressive!! - BladeForums.com
Mar 15, 2012 · * Has good edge retention. I assume it’s at least 58 HRC because it seems most Pakistan-made Damascus knives are described as having 58-60 HRC these days and I believe it!! * Built like a tank. I like how heavy duty and solid the knife is. No blade play. * It’s a beautiful handmade knife. Excellent fit and finish.

I can only hope they've improved their heat treatment these days versus the ones they made back then. My stockman from back then has blades so soft, they're easier to file than annealed ATS-34- like in the low 40's Rc.
