Mar 24, 2015 · Naw, you do not have to worry about building a 199 into something that would HAVE to turn 7000 rpm. Too many people are under the false impression that some how a 258 cu in AMC I-6 engine has gobs of torque. It don't. Essentially due to the weeny little carburetor and the purely gutless cam it has it has almost no torque in the first place.

Sep 24, 2019 · When I worked in the old AMC dealership shop one of our older couple customers came in with their later 60s American. They drove it to California and back to Iowa. On the way back through Nebraska, I believe it was, about half-way in they said it suddenly lacked the power it used to have, just didn't sound the same.

Mar 31, 2014 · Based on a 1980 TSM which shows the beginning of what I think is the last cycle, your engine is a 258 built on September 22, 1988. That's somewhat of a guess. Jan 31, 2025 · The Renix uses a different type of crankshaft position sensor (CPS) that is essentially a coil. It doubles as an RPM indicator, hence the spaces/notches all around. The wider spaces on both indicate TDC -- two pistons are at TDC on an I-6 at any given time, one on compression and one on exhaust stroke.

Jul 4, 2011 · There are engine kits out there. Parts are easy to come by for the most part. The two big hassels will be the pistons and water pump since those were only used 64-67. When I rebuilt the 6 in my wagon, I got those parts from Kanter (they are one of the places that sell engine kits).

Nov 30, 2009 · The 232 is a solid work-horse! I love them, the 258 and the later offshoot, the 4.0 liter. No harder to rebuild than ANY inline 6, and you might find less wear than with some.
