LEDs have polarity, meaning current must pass from anode to cathode to activate. The anode is labelled a or + , and cathode is labelled k or - . The cathode is the short lead and there may be a slight flat spot on the body of round LEDs.

To solder the ATtiny onto the board, I first examined its polarity, searching for an indicative dot or symbol on the board. I ended up using a microscope to view it better. Here is the dot on the ATtiny412, which should be aligned with the first pin.

I had also looked at the data sheet for my red LED to figure out the polarity (the line was the anode). The Arduino is not involved in the programming at all, it's just a convenient means to provide 5V power here at home where I am without a power supply. I plugged the Arduino in to my PC to keep it away from the programming that I'm going to do on the laptop.
